I am so sorry to just hear of this sad news. I admired and respected Ross so much for his insight, intelligence, sincere camaraderie, as well as his "unique" way of looking at the world. I had the office next to his and it was certainly an experience when Dave and he locked some manager in there and began to "tutor" him.i will be forever grateful for all I learned from him

My deepest condolences, Helen, and family. I have fond memories of working with Ross doing cellular mobile at Bell Labs in the late 70s and early 80s. "Don't get old, Burt," he used to tell me. Was the manager he christened "Turtle" really a turtle? I don't know, but it was certainly fun to hear him describe the man that way. I learned some wonderful expressions for fast clock signals in digital electronic circuits bouncing up and down -- I won't repeat them, but I will treasure them. One of my favorite memories is meeting by chance some individual in an arbitrary part of the Whippany Bell Labs complex; someone who had an interest in computer science and was likely more advanced than myself in the field. I would bring the person to Ross, ostensibly to have a computer science discussion. But really I was interested in getting Ross started on a rant, for the other person's surprise, shock, or perhaps amusement. After about the second time, Ross wisened up to what I was up to -- I gave it away by the nature of the questions I asked. His reaction and his smile at that point were priceless.

My deepest sympathy on the loss of Ross. My late husband Ken and I both worked with Ross over the years at Bell Labs. We last met him one day at the Denville Library. I remember so well Ross working with and talking with us when I first came to Whippany. He was not always happy or optimistic, but always philosophical and always fun to listen to – entertaining, in fact. He always made us smile. He is one of my many good memories about working at Whippany.

I was really sorry to hear about your dad, I liked Ross and we have emailed for years. I spent part of yesterday going back over our emails, the last one was just a week ago.
He had me included in his email group too, so I got a real picture of his likes and dislikes.
I will really miss him.

Ross was a regular at the Pizza lunches with former AT&T/Lucent retirees that were organized by John Robbins. Often those lunches had to wait until Ross returned from Canada. With a twinkle in his eye, he would regale us with stories, irreverently poking fun at human foibles. Snafus in company management decisions, pulling pranks on design engineers, publishing bias in peer reviewed Physics journals, run-ins with students in academia, etc. He let us know that he helped find one third of the isotopes in the atomic number vs atomic mass graph. Not an easy feat since the existence of some last only seconds after they are created. There was always something to talk about, especially since many of the other attendees had PhDs in Physics. After my wife and I vacationed in Nova Scotia, Canada and discovered "Canadian" tea, i.e. the King Cole brand of tea, he became our "supplier" after the box of 200 tea sachets ran out. He commented that people in the US were always asking for tea from Canada, and people in Canada were always asking for coffee from the US. While the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was working its way through Congress, he illuminated us on the Canadian Medical system. After the Fukushima meltdown, there were discussions on how the US mainland might be affected and whether to take Iodine tablets as a prevention. In short, there was always something interesting to talk about. He will be sorely missed.
Janet and I offer our sincere condolences to Helen and all the members of his family.
