The tears are flooding my eyes as I try to write this. I learned today after trying to phone Doris to give her my birthday greetings that she is no longer on the face of this earth. Our yearly chats can happen no more. I met "D" at Morristown Memorial Hospital in 1965, where we both worked on a surgical unit. A life long friendship developed as "D" welcomed me into her life and her Cedar Lake home. She was truly a gift to me and the many kernels of wisdom she shared and the many ways she enriched my life are far too numerous to count. Our travels together were never to be forgotten and we always reminisced with much laughter and joy, about our months spent in Hawaii as well as our other travels. "D" was a "one of a kind" remarkable, amazing, dear friend and my world will be a little less bright with her passing. Billy and Bobby, I have fond memories of you both. Please know that my thoughts are with you and your families as you journey forward. Wilda King Schutz, Toronto

Dear Family of Doris Cohn,
My husband Steve and I and our kids live around the corner from Doris on Cedar Lake Road. Doris was always very sweet with a wave and a friendly hello. My favorite memory was going back quite a few years when she still kept the chickens. There was a coyote prowling around between our house and hers so I called to let her know and that she should watch out for the chickens. She came by a few days later with the most beautiful brown eggs from her hens to say thank you. She was a kind and gentle soul, may she rest in peace.
With deepest sympathy,
Sue Bias

“Come in, dear girl – the door’s open,” Doris would call out to me as I stepped over her threshold. Then, looking me up and down: “Where did you get that sweater? And who does your hair? Didn’t your mother ever tell you...”. Yes, Doris, my mother told me. And so, eyes twinkling, in your unfailingly direct and loving way, did you – always.
To step into Doris’s house was to step back in time, forward in faith, and square into friendship of the best kind. For Doris lived her life as few I’ve known, with her slight, sturdy body, enormous heart, and startlingly sharp mind, and in a singularly self-determined, consistent, admirable fashion that revealed and exemplified her values at every turn.
Though I am proud and certain that we were friends, many of Doris’s best friends were animals. In fact, they were family – they knew it and Doris knew it – as she wrestled Hattie into her arms to give her medicine, petted Ra in a patch of sunlight, gave tiny kitten Ella a bite of food from her own mouth. All this while serving me tea (from her own chamomile, of course) in most elegant style.
Doris went to her Lord on Good Friday, a Divine timing indeed. For Doris trusted completely that her Lord was waiting for her, and that death would complete their union in a place of endless joy, peace, beauty and love. She waited her whole life to be with Him, especially these last few years of illness, and now, she is.
I miss you, Doris. I thank you for everything, including those treasured back issues of “Birds and Blooms” that I keep on my bedside table for reading on dark nights. And I rejoice with you, now and forever.

I remember Ms. Cohn's kindness when my son Dave was about 10 years old. She'd been with one of her chickens to his school and invited us to bring him over to meet them all. Dave (now 42) was fascinated. We were thrilled to get to know such a lovely woman.

Please accept our condolences... we are former Cedar Lake residents and loved Doris. My wife always said she wanted to be like Doris-they were very close and shared many gardening experiences. Doris helped us to get our first dog Lucy, so launching our love of dogs; today I volunteer with a canine rescue here in Pa, thanks to Doris' influence.
Goodbye sweet lady! We'll miss you.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I wanted to share a thought from the bible at Isaiah 25:8 where God promises to "swallow up death forever" and "wipe the tears from all faces". I hope this brings you a measure of peace and comfort during your time of loss.

Doris was my dear friend and confidant. She taught me so many important lessons in my life over the last 33 years. She would send me lovely notes and thank you's in her unique style of making envelopes from pretty magazine pages. I still have many of them.
Doris had a way of always making you feel special and appreciated. I truly loved her and will miss those times together, but am grateful she was called home, she was ready.
My deepest condolences to her family and those many friends who were close.

I live in the Denville area and want to express my condolances for your loss. I have found great comfort in a bible verse that says "he will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." (Revelation 21:4)
