Obituary of Mark R. Thunberg
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Thunberg, a longtime Boonton resident who passed away on June 10th, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Mark’s presence in this world will be dearly missed.
Mark was born in August of 1946 to Alice and Myron “Bud” Thunberg in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. The Thunberg family soon made the move to Boonton Township, where Mark would grow up. A graduate of Boonton High School, Mark went on to continue his education at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania and earned his Bachelors degree in History. Soon after graduating, Mark made the decision to join the US Air Force to serve our country during the Vietnam war. His years of dedication and service to protecting our country is something that will never be forgotten. Later on in life, Mark began his own family. His two daughters, Alisson and Adrienne, were the lights of his life. He was always their number one supporter, especially when it came to their numerous musical activities in grade school. As his daughters grew up and began families of their own, Mark also loved and treasured his grandchildren, making time to attend their games and recitals. It is almost certain that he is up in Heaven, looking down and cheering on his family, always their number one fan.
Mark was a longtime employee of Prudential Insurance, but he did take an early retirement. He spent his retirement at The Knoll Country Club as Pro Shop Manager in Parsippany. He officially retired in 2018. In his free time, he enjoyed the simple things in life. He enjoyed watching different sports on tv, attending the occasional football game or race track event. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed talking long walks with his beloved dog, Sophie. But, above all this, Mark loved tending to his yard. He would spend hours in the hot sun in pursuit of the most well-trimmed lawn and perfectly pruned garden. He took pride in the appearance of his home, and sure had fun putting the work in.
Though his passing brings us all great sorrow, we take comfort in knowing he is at peace, reunited with those who passed before him. It is now the task of his survivors to continue on his memory in their thoughts and actions. Mark’s surviving family members include his daughters, Alisson Ponce and her husband, Felix, Adrienne Perez and her husband, Jerry, his grandchildren, EJ, Petra, Charlie, Samuel, and his former wife, Susan Thunberg, who still helped care for him in his final days. Please keep Mark’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this trying time.
A graveside service for Mark is scheduled for Saturday, June 24th, 2023, at 11 AM at Rockaway Valley Cemetery on Valley Road in Boonton, New Jersey. All are welcome to come and share their favorite memory of Mark with his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations are being accepted to Semper Fi & America’s Fund via inmemof.org. Please leave a condolence, light a candle, and share your favorite memory of Mark here to continue to celebrate his life.
