Obituary of Charles E. Weldon Jr.
Charles Edward Weldon Jr, age 88, of Indian Lake, Denville, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones at home on Lenape Island on May 29, 2023. Charlie was born on January 22, 1935 in Union City, NJ to the late Charles and Helen (nee Berger) Weldon Sr, but grew up in Indian Lake, lucky enough to live most of his life on Lenape Island. Charlie graduated from Boonton High School, and then served with the 69th Infantry Division of the US Army. He was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany for two years during the Korean War and also served in the 519th Transportation Co. During his time in the Army, he enjoyed using his leave time to visit many European countries. After an honorable discharge, he worked as an apprentice machinist before moving on to Nucor Corp as a shop foreman and a production manager. He finished his career at Nuclear Research Corporation as a consultant in the nuclear instrument division, which made radiation detection equipment for ballistic submarines in the US Navy and Apache helicopters for the US Army.
Charlie was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Mary’s Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a founding member of the Craigmeur Ski Lodge in Vermont and was a member of the National Ski Patrol for many years. He loved skiing throughout the US, saving up his vacation every year to ski two weeks in Europe. It was through his passion for skiing that he met the love of his life, Theresa Lagomarsino Weldon, who he was married to for 52 years. He made sure to pass on his love of skiing to his children and his grandchildren who he adored and relished seeing them enjoy the sport he loved so much.
Charlie was the beloved father of Michael Weldon of Denville and Suzanne Weldon DeMichele of Chatham, father-in-law to Lyn and Vincent, brother-in-law to Jean Lagomarsino, doting “Pa” to Caroline, Emma and Brynn Weldon and Mia and Vivian DeMichele, and considered a great and loyal friend to many. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Marilyn Tatka and Pat Clackner.
Charlie believed in service and exemplified this throughout his life by serving in the US Army as well as being a dedicated and tireless volunteer within the community of Indian Lake. He served many years on the Board of Trustees in various positions like his father before him and as his son Michael does now. Charlie would lead the charge on work weekends, show up to help without being asked, and tinker in his workshop to fix anything needed within the community. He was an equally welcoming soul to both new members of the Lake as well as old timers like himself. He was considered Indian Lake’s best salesman as he would declare to anyone who would listen – and some who wouldn’t – that it was “the greatest place on earth to live.”
Charlie is survived by countless friends and neighbors who will miss his generous attitude, his pure love of skiing in untracked powder, Uncle Sam Slalom Skiing on July 4th, claims for “first water,” and his unmatched historical knowledge of the Indian Lake community. He was the rock of his family and will be missed tremendously, but they will continue to live the mantra that he lived everyday….family first, community and country.
