Obituary of James E. Loewen

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James E. Loewen. A beloved father, adoring “Pop”, and friend to all, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023. He had shared 87 years of unconditional love, infectious laughter, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.

James was born in Summit, NJ to the late William and Lillian Loewen. He was raised in Maplewood, NJ alongside his two siblings. After graduating High School, he proudly served our country in the United States Military. At age 17, he joined the National Guard and was acquired by the Army; by age 19, he had joined the United States Marine Corps, where he remained until his Honorable Discharge at age 22. He married the love of his life and best friend, Elonda “Lonnee” Fitzgerald, in 1960, and as they say, the rest is history. Moving to Denville in 1961, they walked through this rollercoaster we call life, hand in hand supporting one another. James was always a hard and dedicated worker, making sure to support his family. He had worked in management for several trucking companies, holding positions such as VP of Operations for Carretta Trucking and President of Maxi Transport. He also owned and operated the Sussex Sports Complex for a few years. He was a dedicated member of the Dover Elks and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. In later years, he loved to go fishing and spend time on the water. Above all else, his family was his pride and joy. As Pop once said, “Any time we can get this entire family in one room, it’s a holiday.” He will be forever missed and treasured for generations to come. Although we are deeply saddened by his passing, we take comfort in knowing he is now reunited with his beloved wife, Lonnee; his parents, William and Lillian; and his siblings, Doris Doris and William Loewen.

His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his adored children, Lori (Rich) Loewen, Jim Loewen, Bill (Coleen) Loewen, Bob (Gina) Loewen, Frank (Lisa) Loewen, and Lynn (Rob) Simpson; his daughter-in-law, Karen Loewen; his cherished grandchildren, Patrick (Kirstin) McElroy, Kaitlyn (Kurt) Albert, Kayla (Frank) Colasuonno, Elan, James, Danielle, Billy, Lily, Julia, Kelsi, and Lainie Loewen, and Jack and Elle Simpson; his treasured great-grandchildren, Ava and Alex Albert, Evelyn, Liam, and Amelia McElroy, Siena and Sonny Colasuonno; and many dear nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Public Visitation will take place on Thursday, June 1st from 3 - 7 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Avenue, Denville. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, June 2nd at 10 am at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 15 Myers Avenue, Denville. *Those unable to attend Mass will be able to watch it live via St. Mary's website, or by clicking here* Entombment will immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
