Obituary of George Sauer

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

George Sauer passed away peacefully on September 23, 2021 at the age of 88.  He was born in Hungary and escaped the Nazis to eventually make it to Israel shortly after its founding, before emigrating to Australia and then the United States.  He worked as a project manager for several major engineering firms, including Combustion Engineering Lummus and Foster Wheeler, most notably on projects involving coal gasification.  He lived in New Jersey since the late sixties, first in East Orange, then South Orange and then Denville.

For many years, George pursued his avocation of being a cantor, serving synagogues and congregations around central New Jersey on the holidays.  He also studied for several years at the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown and became knowledgeable on various subjects in Jewish studies and history.  He was also civically active and served as a poll worker in every election until recently.  He loved traveling and spending time with his significant other, Alice, with whom he lived in Denville, and his son Andrew, daughter-in-law Shiree, and grandchildren Talia and Ariel who he frequently visited in Florida.

George Sauer is survived by his significant other, Alice Mikulak, of Denville, by his son Andrew (Shiree) Sauer of Jacksonville, Florida whom he shared with his late former wife Esther Sauer, and by his granddaughter Talia Sauer and grandson Ariel Sauer.

Funeral services and burial will take place on Sunday, September 26 at 10:30 AM at Mount Freedom Hebrew Cemetery in Randolph.  Donations may be directed to American Friends of Magen David Adom, afmda.org.
