Please share your memories here. His family will cherish them.
Donald was born in Jersey City to the late John and Elizabeth (nee O’Brien) Smith and was one of three sons to bless the family. After his schooling he enlisted with the US Navy, proudly serving our country. It was during his time in the service where he met the lovely Maxine Sink. While stationed on the U.S.S. Essex, Maxine was vacationing in Rhode Island. As they say….the rest is history.
Maxine and Donald were married in 1965 and they found their forever home in Denville in 1970. They raised their children here and created lifelong friendships. Donald started his longtime career with the Denville Police Department in 1967 and retired as Lieutenant in 1995. He loved his time with the department and being able to serve the people of our town. “Smitty” truly was gold.
He was active with the American Legion Post 390 and the VFW Post 3401, Morris Plains. In his spare time he enjoyed a round of golf or a trip to the casino. Above all, he loved being with his family. He was blessed with five grandchildren and he loved watching the kids grow. Don and Maxine took a trip each year to be with the kids in Arizona and they cherished this time. Although we are saddened by his passing, we take comfort in knowing he is with his beloved Maxine again.
Predeceased by his loving wife Maxine and his brothers Robert and David Smith; he leaves his children, Jeff Smith, Keith Smith, and Wendy (Artie) Tupaczewski; his adored grandchildren, Cory (Stefanie), Shane, Alicia, Elizabeth, and Matthew; his treasured great-grandson, Jack; his dear Aunt Agnes; and many more family and friends.
