I remember when Joe came to FIT and I was on the union health & safety committee and I thought wow he's gonna have a lot on his plate. He showed endless enthusiasm and knowledge in making it a better, safer and healthier workplace. He took it all on and worked with all with a cheerful attitude and boundless energy for each and every situation. I will always remember his particular laugh and sense of humor. I am finding it hard to believe that Joe has gone from us. He was such a kind hearted man with a generous nature. I met him while he was interviewing for his position at FIT. Over the years he was always so helpful and pleasant to work with, even under sometimes difficult circumstances. He often spoke very lovingly about his family and his time spent with them. My heart goes out to them during this difficult time. May your memories of him comfort you.

To the entire family - I don't have to tell you what an amazing man Joe was - you already witnessed it every day. As devastating a loss as this is, I feel we are all better off having known Joe. He left this world a better place, and he lived and died on his terms. The pain is just evidence of what he meant to everyone. He may be gone, but never forgotten. God bless. Steve & Michele Shaffer

To the Arcoleo Family...I am still numb from your loss. Joe was a lot of things...he was crazy and kooky, funny and witty, compassionate and caring, meticulous and passionate...but most of all he was a man of principle and integrity. Joe was perfectly comfortable being himself, and he was never afraid to stand up for what was right. If he disagreed with you he would explain why it was so, but he would never raise his voice or demean anyone for having a difference of opinion. Joe's varied interests made him one of the most interesting people whom I had ever met. He was brilliant but humble, and he was always willing to share his knowledge with anyone who was willing to listen.
I really got to know Joe when we worked the funnel cake tent at the fire department carnival. It was a miserable job in that hot tent with batter and boiling oil spilling everywhere, but Joe made it fun - and he drove us crazy with that megaphone. In recent years I would run into Joe while commuting on the train. He was always as happy to see me as I was to see him. What was normally a boring commute always ended up with a great conversation. One time he explained the current political climate in Honduras. Another time he gave me a crash course on soil chemistry after I told him I had just planted a new tomato garden. He was proud of his family and especially proud of his children and the individuals they had become.
Joe at his worst (yes, I had the
privilege of witnessing this a few times and they are great memories) was still better than most people at their best. I
will never forget him.

I have very special memories of Joe through the years at FIT. I was always in awe of his passion and brilliance. I too was subject to many of his stories and new if I did see him in the halls, I would be in store for some lengthy but entertaining story. All of them were truly enlightening. At times we would get a bit nervous, often thinking if I missed something or was completely "compliant" as well.
I remember on time when he watched me unload some materials, curbside in front of the A building. I happened to put them on the snow, then proceeded to bring them to the A building basement. He tracked me down to let me know that I carried snow into the building, which melted and made some wet spots on the floor. I never thought of it and I was actually made an example of at the next Compliance meeting. Joe was on top of everything.
In all, I will truly miss Joe and know heaven is now in store for a powerhouse of a man.

I was deeply saddened to see the news on News 12. I followed all day until I was sure they were talking about Joe.
Joe was an icon at FIT. We used to affectionately call him Osha Joe. He was unflappable. I was amazed at his patience when dealing with emotional people, a gentleman always and concerned with safety above all. He was also very helpful, ready with thoughtful advice about safety on a personal level.
My heart and and sympathy goes out to his family.

Condolences to Mrs. Arcoleo and Family as well as Joe's FIT EHS Family, Jean and Kathy. We feel your tears and are shedding many ourselves. Joe will always hold a special place in our hearts and mere mention of his name generates a smile on our faces. Each of you family members we thank because you were the loves of his life and helped make him the person that we knew, especially you, Mrs. Arcoleo.
From Joe's legacy of kindness, generosity, and selflessness, we know the good name he made. And a good name by doing good works is the thing of real value.
Having to come to the house of mourning we are all induced to remember life's brevity and the thing of most importance - the way we live our lives now. Which is what Joe's life seemed to echo.
We shared office space with Joe, Jean, and Kathy. I, personally, will miss seeing him as he rushed in and out of the office numerous times a day with and without equipment. I will miss his lengthy monthly reports, his laughter, his humor, his wit, his adventures, him.
May the God of all comfort be with each of you.

I am still shocked. I first met Joe when he was part of a consulting team conducting an environmental audit of the college. I think it was the late 1990's. At the time I was the FIT union's Health & Safety rep.
Then, when Joe was hired to take over Environmental Health & Safety at FIT, he came to me with a stack of papers. They were copies of letters I sent to administrators on behalf of the union regarding the college environment. Instantly Joe & I bonded and on a joint mission to correct the safety issues throughout the campus. His nickname became Safety Joe.
As are you - I am shaken by his loss. Joe & I shared our common pastimes such as running marathons races and competing in triathlons.
I knew of his volunteer activities in NJ but not to the extent I have now learned.
The world is at a loss.
He was a decent, honest man with the highest standards of ethics. He was generous, thoughtful and understanding. I will missed him.
From my family our hearts & prayers go out to Joe's family & friends. Rest In Peace, Joe. You gave generously to the world and it is a better place because of you.

Seeing Joe around the building was always a pleasure! He will be missed dearly. He always had that friendly smile/smirk - always a happy greeting.
I had the pleasure of having Joe in my office just a few short days ago doing an ‘ergonomic-assessment’ of my office space - I needed a better chair to ease my back. The genuine caring that Joe exhibited was delightfully inspiring. I showed him three magic tricks in return for his friendliness which he absolutely LOVED. The smile and curiosity on his face was priceless. With each magic trick shown he wanted to see another…. It was my pleasure to entertain Joe even if only for a few moments.
I didn’t know Joe was a volunteer fireman nor did I know he was training for a triathlon. It is the sign of a gentlemen and honorable man to keep such self-complimentary activities and events private - he was even a better man than we already knew…
My Deepest Sympathies to Joe’s Family. May g-d bless his soul and may he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Reuben Marcus

To the Family of Joseph Arcoleo Jr.
As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, I wish to extend to you my sincerest condolences. There may be many questions that came to mind about life, as well as death. The Bible, God's word clears up these questions, just to name a few: Why does God permit suffering? Why can we be sure that you have the prospect of being reunited with your dear loved one again, right her on earth? What really happens to the dead? To learn more, please feel free to get in touch with us at the local Kingdom Hall in your area or write us for a free home Bible study at WWW.JW.ORG
May the memories of your dear loved one along with the Bible's resurrection promise bring you comfort at this time.
With Heartfelt Sympathy,
Carolyn

Joe, as a brother fireman, fellow diver and friend you will be greatly missed. You were never boring and I remeber many times spending all nighters talking and having fun. Fairwell my friend, godspeed. Prayers to your wife and children.
