To the Danilack Family
My deepest condolences to you all at the loss of your husband and father. I knew Mike for many years and we were both former yet proud Pennsylvanians. Mike was a giant to the international tax practice and an even better person and friend. I was happy to be among his many friends and know he will be solely missed. I hope your fond and warm memories give you comfort at this sad time.
With Kindest wishes.

I am so sad!!!! I met Mike at Penn in 1978. We were friends. I called him to hire him as an attorney in 2014 but he declined. I only wish we could go back to those Penn freshman days in Philly. Our mutual friend Adam also died recently. Me deepest condolences to Mikes family. Mike will be missed by all very much.

I was lucky enough to reconnect with Michael, who is my oldest cousin, over the last year. We spent a few days together in NYC with our Aunt Joanie in May, where we learned, debated, laughed and cried together. I will cherish those days forever. We spent hours on the phone and always ended our calls with "I love you". I will miss seeing his name come up on my phone. I love you Cuz... until we meet again. XOXO

I am extremely saddened to hear this news this evening. Mr. Michael Danilack III was an excellent leader and a great man. I found it refreshing to always find his ear open to any suggestion or opportunity to acquire new knowledge. He definitely was not afraid to say "I'm not sure. Let me find out or direct you to someone who knows". As an executive, within the IRS, he was more approachable then most of my colleagues. I fondly recall the many conversations I had with him about my division prior to his leaving. And I always regretted not taking him up on his offer for some intensive strategic meetings. He really was a good listener and he was proactive as well as innovative. It only stands to reason he had to leave the IRS.
Mr. Danilack, I missed you when you left the Service and I'll miss you more now that you've left your earthly life. Sleep in peace.
Danilack family, be strong and be assured that he leaves fond memories with everyone he ever met.
Sincerely, Toni Wood, Management & Program Analyst, LB&I, WIIC

Mike's best stories were about his sons. He told me one time about how, shortly after leaving the government, he went hiking with them until he was on his back from exhaustion, and then looked up with joy at all three of their faces staring back at him. He was a true force, the clearest, most analytical thinker that I have ever met, and at the same time he had a unique ability to motivate and lead people. He was a good man, and a good friend. May memories of him be a blessing. I will miss him.

Several of us who worked for and with Mike when he was at Chief Counsel would like the family to know how much he meant to us. We have been emailing memories and comments to each other since we learned with shock and sorrow that he had passed. He was our friend, confidante, promoter, advocate and leader. He did all this with humor and wisdom. He learned and mastered International Tax faster than anyone I met in 36 years of service. He was not afraid to make the hard calls. He was a gifted leader. We all will miss him terribly.

Mike was a brother-in-law to me and uncle to my children. We all spent many weeks together in the summer at Lake Chautauqua where he was such a fun presence and was often the champion of the sea weed battles. We’d see him on ski trips in the winter, too. This was many years ago and I’m enjoying bringing up those memories. He had a light hearted, care free happy attitude that made him a pleasure to hang out with. I also knew him as a very principled man with a serious work ethic. I respect him for his years of government service and the considerable influence he had on tax policy. Without question he was a very present and caring father and his sons can be proud of their heritage. I’m deeply saddened to say goodbye to Mike and extend my deepest sympathies to Hugh, Geoff, Matt, Cherie and Mike’s other relatives. Sending light and peace to you, Mike, on the journey of whatever comes next.

I had the pleasure of working with Mike during his time at IRS and PwC. In both settings, he remained a passionate advocate of fair and efficient tax administration and worked hard at trying to ensure both the USG and taxpayers understood the tax laws. He had a strong work ethic and on the rare occasions that he took time to talk about something other than tax, he would always return to the topic of his sons and how they were progressing at school and in sports. He was extremely proud of his family and it showed on his face whenever he would speak about them.
He was a force to be reckoned with in the tax world and will be missed many.

My memory of Michael comes from a snowy Christmas we spent together in Topsfield, Massachusetts. Michael was probably in college at that time, and Topsfield was a town made up of people named Adams, Potter, Perkins, Osgood, and Kennedy. These people were Pilgrims; however, they were not Vikings. Michael Danilack, he was a Viking. It was a typical Christmas, cooped up in a Massachusetts town playing board games, with a Nor’easter ripping outside. After days of Mark trying to come up with the longest song title for charades in an attempt to stump/embarrass the person acting it out, Michael decides he needs some air and is heading out into the storm. BTW the longest song title I remembered was Elvis Costello’s, “What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding.” When you think of Vikings, you either think football playing or dragon slaying. Either one is good for this story. After charades ended, Michael heads out in the pitch black, snow filled Nor’easter. We were all thinking he’ll be back in 5 minutes. Nope, after a lot of worrying and over two hours later, Michael walks through the front door. He looked like Ragnar Longshanks. Red beard, iced over from his breath freezing back in his face, icicles hanging from his nostrils, and a giant smile. The Viking didn’t say a word, just a smile. We all laughed, and love it and loved him. RIP

To the Danilack family - I am so very sorry for your loss. I had the great good fortune to work closely with Mike at the IRS from 2011-2014. He was an exceptional leader and a strategic thinker. His vision for reinventing the international compliance program was both bold and practical. He made everyone feel like part of a team, eager to bring their best to the office every day. He was a staunch defender of his troops. As devoted as Mike was to the agency and the profession, he was obviously a loving and devoted father. Seeing him interact with his sons was a delight. To the Danilack Family, my condolences.
I met Mike in January 2010 when he arrived to be IRS Deputy Commissioner, International. From the moment he arrived we all realized he had a vision, and the drive to make it happen, to improve the government’s capability in dealing with global tax issues. Not only was Mike an impressive intellect when it came to tax, he could visualize how to best organize and train people to maximize their potential. His ideas carry on in the IRS.
Mike also demonstrated an admirable level of love for his family. I recall when I first met Hugh – he was on a summer intern program in Washington and he stopped in one Friday afternoon. What an impressive young man – our conversation was closely monitored by Mike…I got the sense that we were both being evaluated. Mike’s summer trips with the family, whether the beach in New Jersey or trekking the Camino de Santiago with his boys, kept him grounded. I recall fondly Mike working his schedule to get to Hanover, NH to see Hugh, then Hugh and Matt play soccer. I think he struggled to get to Geoff’s games at Williams but he made every effort to be present. I kept in touch with him following his departure from the IRS and recall the pride when he told me that his niece, Lindsey, was graduating at the top of the United States Military Academy’s Corps of Cadets. I suppose that was an expectation for a Danilack – to me it was simply wonderful.
What a fantastic man. He is missed by too many to count.

Over the past few years, I"ve had the pleasure to work very closely with and get to know Mike quite well. Due to scheduling, he had to decline my offer to get out for a round of golf, but he promised me that we would get out some other time. I'm going to hold him to that promise - though I know now that the course will be much nicer than the one where I normally play. His family meant the world to him - he loved to spend time in the great outdoors with his boys. He was a true gentleman and luminary - I will always look up to him and remember him fondly.
