Obituary of Joseph Bartholomew

Joe Bartholomew, Rockaway

Joseph Bartholomew passed peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2019.  He shared 74 years of love and sports enthusiasm with everyone he knew.  Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, March 21st from 9:30am - 12 noon at the Norman Dean Home For Services, 16 Righter Ave. Denville.  A Prayer Service and Military Honors will begin at 12 o’clock.   Flowers are lovely, but in lieu of, please consider donations to the good work of the Gary Sinise Foundation PO BOX 368 Woodland Hills,CA 91365. Please share your memories here.  His family will cherish them forever. 

Joe was born in 1944 to the late Marguerite Bartholomew. As the baby of the family and having been much younger than his siblings, he grew up with lots of love and influence from the older kids.  After his schooling, he joined the US Army where he served in Germany for a few years.  Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home and found himself smitten over a young lady from Elmwood Park.  Her name was Rose Mary Cannata and the couple married in 1977.  They settled in Rockaway where they raised their daughter Paulette.   

Joe was an avid outdoorsman and could be found hunting often. He was a huge sports fan, always rooting on his beloved NY Giants and NY Yankees.  He also played golf and enjoyed bowling. He was a hard worker, and devoted 31 years to PSE&G.  In his time away, he liked taking trips south to Atlantic City to try his hand at the slots. These were great times for him and Roe.  

Joe was also very patriotic.  He was a proud American and enjoyed his time with fellow Veterans at the American Legion, Rockaway.  In his later years, he mellowed and gave up hunting, taking care of the deer that visited the family home instead.  Although we are saddened by his passing, we are comforted in knowing he is at peace and watching over his family with love. 

He leaves happy memories to his wife Rose Mary of 42 years, daughter Paulette Bartholomew; sister Agnes “Mitzi” Burns; many nieces and nephews; and Taz the cat. His siblings Jean Bernardi, Marion Firrincili, Walter “Sonny,” and James have all predeceased him.
