Obituary of Stanley W. Tomensky

Stanley W. Tomensky, of Denville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, September 17, 2018 at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville. He was 84 years young.

Born in Vineland and raised in Malaga, he attended Clayton High School and lettered in Baseball and Football and was inducted into the Clayton High School Athletic Hall of Fame in November 2013.

Upon Graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served in Korea as a Regimental Motor Sergeant of the 8^th Regiment, Second Division. Returning to the states, he was assigned to Nike Headquarters outside of Pittsburg, PA. At the end of his tour, he was presented with a Letter of Commendation for efficient coordination of operations. Upon his honorable discharge, he enrolled in Glassboro State College (Rowan University).

While at Glassboro, he was President of Mullica Hall Men’s Dormitory, President of the Future Teacher’s Association, and State Treasurer of the New Jersey Future Teacher’s Association. He was a member of the first class to graduate with a BA in Secondary Education from Glassboro State College.

He met the love of his life, Harriet Holden, at Glassboro State, married and moved to the Indian Lake section of Denville in 1959. He began his educational career, alongside his wife, who taught in Denville for many years. His first teaching position was in Rockaway Township.

Mr. Tomensky went on to earn his MA in 1965 in Administration and Supervision from Newark State College (Kean University) and soon after became a Principal/Transportation Coordinator in the Montville Public Schools. He also served as a Principal in the Hopatcong Borough Public Schools. He ended his career teaching in the Newark Public Schools where he received, among others, an Outstanding Teacher Award, presented by Governor Kean.

He and his wife retired in 1992 and enjoyed their homes in Indian Lake and Silver Beach during the summer, while spending their winters at Jensen Beach on Hutchinson Island, Florida.

He is predeceased by his wife of 57 years and survived by his beloved son Craig and his wife Carol M. and his devoted son Matthew and his caring daughter-in-law, Carol L.; his cherished grandchildren, Melissa and her husband Anthony, Thomas, Scott, Travis, and Keith. His treasured great-grandson, Anthony “Little A”. His two sisters, Mary Jane Jones and Richard of Merritt Island, FL and Louise Teti and husband Fred of Vineland. He also regretfully leaves behind his supportive neighbors on Lenape Island and a caring friend, Mrs. Doro Crothers Flynn.

Mr. Tomensky believed fervently that the second greatest profession to preaching was Teaching, for the soul and mind make up the essence of mankind.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 20^th from 4 – 8 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 21^st at 10 am at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 10 N. Pocono Rd., Mt. Lakes, NJ. Entombment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery Mausoleum, Bridgewater. Memorial Donations are being accepted in his memory to Atlantic Home Care & Hospice by way of www.inmemoryof-memorial.org.
