Obituary of Ernest Zoppi

Ernest Zoppi, of Denville, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover. He was 92 years old.

Born and raised in Newark, he was one of eight children Educated in Newark public schools, he proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the U.S.S Chemung from 1943-1946. After returning home, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for several years before working for the Essex County Courts where he retired in 1992. The court house is where he met his soulmate, Edith Manfredi and they were married in 1968. Their first home was in  Bloomfield,where they lived for several years before relocating to Cedar Grove. Edith passed away in 1995 and Ernest continued to live in Cedar Grove until moving to Denville four years ago.

Ernie was a kind man who was loved by family and friends alike. He had a passion for traveling, and took many trips to Italy and South America with his wife Edith, and later with his cherished friend Anita Tierney. He was a very bright man with a  tremendous sense of humor and a quick wit;He was a trivia buff, crossword puzzle aficionado, and a lover of all racquet sports, especially racquetball.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Edith, he leaves only joyful memories to his loving brother John Zoppi; his caring in-laws, Orlando & Diana Manfredi, Elena O’Brien, and Anita Riccio; his cherished friend, Anita Tierney; and many treasured nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.


Graveside Service will be held on Monday, September 10th at 11:30 am at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 225 Ridgedale Ave., East Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in honor of Ernie by way of www.inmemoryof-memorial.org. Please leave a condolence and special memory for his family.
