Obituary of Florence Walsh

Please share a memory of Florence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Florence Joan Walsh died peacefully at Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover on September 19, 2017.  She would have turned 98 on October 21st.   A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 23rd at 10:30 am at the Norman Dean Home For Service, 16 Righter Ave, Denville.  Interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.  Friends may visit beginning at 9 am Saturday morning.

Florence was born in the Bronx, New York.  She and her late sister, Lucille Katherine (Kitty) Boertzel, were raised by their mother, Frances, primarily in New York City where she graduated from high school.

Florence was employed by the Federal Home Loan Bank for over 30 years.  She was the executive assistant to the President of the bank.  A portion of those years was spent in One World Trade Center.  She retired prior to September 11, 2001.  As a former occupant of the World Trade Center she enjoyed a private tour of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.  In her retirement she worked part time for a local bank in New Jersey.

Florence resided in Fort Lee, NJ with her mother for many years.  In 1972, they moved to Paramus where they lived with her sister.  In 2000, Florence and Kitty moved to Fox Hills in Rockaway Township, where she resided until her death.  She escaped New Jersey winters for many years in Delray Beach, Florida.

Florence loved to travel.  She was adventurous and was not afraid to venture to far away places as a single woman.  Among the places she visited were Turkey, Singapore, Greece, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, France, Ireland, Italy and England.

Florence enjoyed activities at Fox Hills such as water aerobics, attending theater productions, trips to casinos and racetracks.  Although not Italian, she enjoyed the activities of the Italian Club at Fox Hills.  She liked to do crossword puzzles and crocheting afghans.  She was a lifelong Yankees fan and a Giants season ticket holder.  She traveled to the Rose Bowl in 1987 to watch the Giants win the Super Bowl.

Florence is survived by her nephew, Kenneth and his wife Gail who reside in Green Pond, NJ.  She was particularly fond of Kenneth and Gail’s children, Todd of New York City (married to Karla) and Allyson of Boston, MA and watching all of their soccer and lacrosse games.

If anyone so desires, please make a contribution to the Salvation Army in Florence’s memory.
