Obituary of Monica Dougherty
Monica Dougherty, Loving Mom & Grandma
“And until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand.”
Monica “Mona” Dougherty passed away peacefully on July 5, 2017 with her family at her side. She shared 92 years of faith and love with all who knew her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 12 noon at St. Cecilia's Church, 90 Church St., Rockaway. Interment to follow at St. Cecilia's Cemetery. Friends and relatives may visit on Friday, July 14th from 4-8 pm and on Saturday from 9-11 am at the Norman Dean Home For Services. Donations in her name may be made to the good work of St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital by way of www.inmemoryof-memorial.org To leave a condolence, please go to www.normandean.com
Mona was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland to the late Thomas and Rose Wright. She immigrated to the US in 1952 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. As chance would have it, she met James Dougherty, a Belfast native at an Irish Dance. After a whirlwind romance the couple married and started a family of their own. They lived in Ridgefield Park for many years, relocating to Rockaway in 1996. Mona was an exceptional seamstress and made most of the clothing that her children wore growing up. Her family was her universe and she did everything she could to give the kids a wonderful life with opportunities she didn’t have. She instilled the values of faith, family and traditions always. When you didn’t think her heart could burst with any more joy, Mona became a Grandmother. She adored and doted on her ten grandchildren and would brag about them to anyone who would listen. She always felt blessed for her family and even in her final days, she was surrounded with their love and prayers. We take comfort in knowing that she is re united with her sweetheart Jim and that they are watching over us.
Predeceased by her husband James (2014); she leaves beautiful memories to her children Thomas (Maryanne), Maureen Cox (Al), Christine Greggor (Keith), Pauline O”Donnell (Stephen), and Kieran (Susan); her adored grandchildren Cory, Shannon, Alexis, Colleen, Aidan, Kelly, Shane, Monica, Ciaran and Brogan; and many more dear relatives and friends.
