Obituary of Joseph Patrick Smith
Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joseph Patrick Smith died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 17, 2016. He was 83. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 21st at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, Denville. Friends and relatives may visit on Wednesday, April 20th from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Donations in his name may be made to Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation by way of www.inmemoryof-memorial.org or a charity of your choice.
Born in Paterson, Joe graduated from Clifton High, where he was captain of the football team. He was a graduate of Seton Hall University and did post graduate studies at the Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT). In 1968 he and his wife Helen settled in Denville, where they raised their family. He proudly served his country with the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. Joe worked as a systems analyst for many years with Exxon Mobil, retiring in 1992. He was an active citizen and was involved in the affairs of the Denville BOE, and stayed busy with the Denville Seniors and The Men’s Club. Joe was an avid reader, played Soduko daily and was an exceptional chess player. Joe loved spending time with his family; especially his cherished grandson Brian. Brian was Joe’s biggest source of strength, while Joe was Brian’s biggest fan! He will be missed immeasurably and loved always.
Surviving is his wife Helen (nee Ozga) of 56 years; his children Joseph (Cheryl Pierce), Maria Smith and Michael (Lila Coello-Smith); adored grandson Brian Smith; brother Cyril Smith; brother in law Anthony Ozga; and many more loving relatives and dear friends.
