“To find a man’s true character, play golf with him.” Charles P. Berardo passed away on Wednesday at Morristown Medical Center. He was 89 years young. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 7th at 9:30 am at St. Clement Pope & Martyr Church, Rockaway. Entombment to follow at Locust Hill Mausoleum, 168 N. Sussex St., Dover. Friends and relatives may visit with the family on Friday, November 6th from 4-8 pm at the Norman Dean Home For Services, 16 Righter Ave, Denville. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the good work of the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 66675. Born in Jersey City, Charles was one of three boys. After his schooling, he proudly served his country in the US Navy seeing action in the South Pacific, Africa and Europe. He was a Fire Controlman on the USS Benson and returned home in 1946. Upon his honorable discharge, he settled down and started his family. He worked in retail for many years starting with Charles Menswear, Stearns and retiring in 1993 from Macys. Not one to sit around, Charles quickly found his way to Flanders Valley Golf Course where he made many dear friends and a second career, retiring after nineteen years in 2013. Charles was a longtime parishioner of St. Clement and an avid golfer. He enjoyed meeting new people and conversing with old friends and strangers alike. Above all; he loved being with his family. He was a true gentleman and possessed an uplifting spirit that has not left us. He leaves only happy memories to his wife Shirley (nee Drake); children Thomas Berardo, Denise Pender (Raymond) and Gayle Cooper (Roy); grandchildren Brandon and Justin Pender and Lauren Cooper; brothers Michael and Joseph (Judith) Berardo; and many more loving relatives, friends and acquaintances.
