Thinking of Jay's family today and remembering what a great man he was. I worked with him at USA Today. There were many group trips to NJ to see him perform in his plays (Da & Glengarry Glen Ross come to mind). He was one of a kind!!

83 years ago a great man graced the Earth with his presence, his laughs, his wisdom, and his love. He walked, he danced, he sang, and on his journey touched so many lives. Your spirit will never die Jay(Dad,friend) because your memories will last in everyone's hearts and thoughts forever. I'll miss you. I'll miss your laughs, your stories, your "love ya kid". I promise ...... I promise to try and always put my cereal bowls in the dishwasher, to always remember not to leave my socks in the living room, to always turn the lights off after I've left a room, and when someone else doesn't I will say in my head your most famous words in your voice "Jesus Christ".
I love you.

It seems like Jay "was" The Barn Theatre. He was an institution. I was fortunate enough to be cast in a small role in one of the shows he directed. He was very kind and thoughtful. He definitely left his mark. He will be missed.

It's been so many years (20? 25?) since I was blessed to be able to work with Jay at The Barn, but the impression he's left on me hasn't faded in the slightest. What a great director...wonderful actor...really special family man! I feel so fortunate to have known him. My sincerest condolences to his loving family. The world is just a little less bright without him.

Dear Barbara and family,
We are sad to hear of Jay's passing. He was one of a kind who could light up a room and make you laugh. A true gentleman. Beloved by all who had the pleasure to know him and call him a friend. A shinning light at USA Today.Peter is so grateful to have been able to speak to him a few weeks ago and cried when I told him I had gotten the call about Jay's passing. He said the last thing Jay said to me was I love you Pete, and believe me he was loved by everyone who he met. We always talked about him and his acting and directing abilities. He lived life to the fullest and gave his all to everything he did. He will forever be missed , loved and in our thoughts and prayers as will all of his beloved family.
Unfortunately Pete's health and physical condition makes it impossible to offer our condolences in person but we will be there in heart and spirit.

Jay was an inspiration and mentor to me as a young actor in the early 1970s. I remember his telling how to say something so it would be funny. No else ever explained funny to me - just Jay. I got it and it has stuck all these years later (40+). I treasure the shows I did with him and around him. I have often thought that he put the passion in theatre for me. It has been a constant source of joy throughout my life. I owe so much of that to Jay.

Dear Barbara and family;
I am so very sad that Jay has had to leave us. I always hoped that I'd have another chance to do a show with or for him...crazy how we always think there's time. I first met Jay when he cast me in "Into the Woods" - what a treat and how supportive Jay was of me. Actually, that is what I remember most about him - his supportive words, his character-man ways, that voice,(you were great Kid) and his unending interest in the stage. Somehow, and I know it was his benevolent nature, he always made me feel so good when I would see him at various stage doors. It is something I will always remember and appreciate. Ineffably, he reminded me of my father. I see from the outpouring of grief and appreciation for him that many basked in his fatherly, or mentor-ly energy. I think it is a rare gift and I can only imagine the void his leaving has left. What a force! In that, his memory will stay vivid for all of us and, in a small way, it is a comfort. Condolences, Gayle

Dear Barbara and family,
It would be presumptuous to say “I feel your loss”, but on some level I do, and it hurts.
As an actress that Jay directed I can tell you he made his cast feel they were in the most important play ever written, and they were all worthy of at least a "Tony"! As a friend he was loyal and caring. As a husband and father we saw a man that abounded with warmth and limitless love!
I hope you will find comfort in knowing how respected, admired, and loved he was to all who knew him and peace in knowing he is no longer frightened or in pain.
Love,
Annette

I, along with so very many, am deeply saddened at the passing of Jay. When I didn't see him at the "Y", I was concerned. He used to go there for heart checkups, I guess. He sometimes told me of shows I should have auditioned for, etc. I remember years ago, calling him to find out why I wasn't cast for a particular part, and he was so patient with me and kind. The Barn Theatre will not be the same. My condolences to all - his dear family.

I always called Jay and Barbara after every Barn performance -- to let them know that it just keeps getting better .
Things I remember: how good he was to Barbara and the boys; how good he was to everyone who had the honor of knowing him. He always said: "Casting is the most important " -
I remember how nervous I used to be when I saw him in the congregation when choir was singing !!! of course, he said we were "great"!
