Obituary of Carolyn Cobb Headley
Please share a memory of Carolyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carolyn Cobb Headley, 95, of Denville passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on March 7, 2015.
Carolyn graduated from Dover High School and continued her education through a lifetime love of learning. Although she had only a high school diploma, she was well versed in European and American history and literature, and classical music. She started out her career as a secretary for Mutual Benefit in Newark, NJ. During World War II she and two of her sisters enlisted as WACs and were stationed in Fort Monmouth. Known as the Cobb sisters, they were active in the Camp Choir, and images of the photogenic women were used for recruitment and public relations for the U.S. Army. Carolyn was the administrative aide to the camp commanding officer, and in that role she held Top Secret security clearance. During her service, she was awarded the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Immediately after the war ended, she married her fiancé of nine years, Everett Headley, and together the two of them built their own home where they raised five children. When her two youngest girls started school, she resumed her secretarial career at Cameron Manufacturing, formerly located in Randolph. After several years, she moved on to become a legal secretary for Neville, Pendleton, Latzer & Claps in Mountain Lakes where she worked for many years. She retired at the age of 72, having worked for a short time also at Pitney Harden in Morristown. She was a capable and intelligent woman, who loved her family dearly and in turn was loved and respected by all who knew her. She was a lifetime member of the Union Hill Presbyterian Church. Carolyn also worked as a volunteer with Senator McGinnis and on the League of Women Voters.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Charles Everett Headley (2005), Carolyn is survived by her devoted sister Janet Bricker of Denville, her loving children: Stephen Headley and his wife Lydia of Middleton, MA; David Headley and his wife Barbara of Moorestown; Margaret Brosz and her husband Walter of Langhorne, PA; Jane Nix and her husband Stephen of Denville; Sara Trentacost and her husband Raymond of Basking Ridge; as well as her cherished 11 grandchildren, her adored 2 great-grandchildren, and her admired 9 nieces and 8 nephews.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Saturday, March 14th at 11:30 AM at Union Hill Presbyterian Church, 427 Franklin Road, Denville, NJ. A Graveside Memorial will be held, prior to the Service, at Millbrook United Methodist Cemetery, Randolph, at 10:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Mar. 13th from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville. Please consider donations in her memory to Union Hill Presbyterian Church, 427 Franklin Road, Denville, NJ 07834. Please also share a condolence in her memory.
