Grandpa, its coming up on 4 years that you've gone. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. There are days I go visit you and just sit and talk to you for hours; after all,you were always the best listener. Every holiday, I still buy your favorite little candies...sometimes its reeses, others the hard assortment of hard candies you always seem to have in your little red truck. I know I can't really give them to you, and not many people understand why I get them. But they give me a sense that we're still connected, they give me that inner peace. Sometimes, I even go buy you flowers (even though you were never much of a flower person). And I know it may sound silly, but sometimes they're even blue, one of your favorite colors...They say time heals all wounds and it'll get easier. I'm still waiting for the day it becomes just a little bit easier. Maybe you can send me down some strength, I know you have plenty to spare. Anyway, I hope you're having fun on your fishing trip, and I hope you catch the big one :) your sun may have set on this adventure, but alas a new one begins and the sun rises to greet you for all your days to come. I love you buddy <3

Dad, We miss you and we love you!
Below are the words that will always remind me of you. Love, Terry
Our Dad was a police officer. He took a lot of pride in wearing his uniform and loved his job. He was proud to be a member of the Denville police force. I think he was a fair guy who had compassion for people, but he also knew that he had a job to do. When he put on the uniform, he always looked ready for whatever the day was going to hold. In fact, his day didn’t end after his shift or his retirement. He would sit in his chair in the kitchen and listened to the plectron so that he knew everything that was going on in Denville.
Our Dad was a fisherman. He loved to take his boat out on the lake to go fishing. He shared this passion with my brother, Bill. They would get up at the crack of dawn to make sure that they got the best fish. He would then bring them home and show us how to clean them. Yep, we’ve gutted fish. Which as a girl, I’m not sure that it is a skill that I have used too often. He enjoyed fishing so much, he started the Denville fishing contest. We would all go with him to the lake across from Valleyview and watch them stock the pond. He would then sleep in his car so that no eager fishermen came at night to fish the good ones out before the contest started. To this day, I am not sure if Denville even has that eager of fishermen. But truth be told, he did “bend” the rules a bit that day and told us where to stand to make sure we got a fish.
Our Dad was a hunter. Another passion that he shared with Bill. They would go off and inevitably, by the next morning, there would be a dead deer hanging in our garage. He was so proud of my brother when he shot a large buck, and his photo was in the newspaper. For the longest time, we had the stuffed deer head in our breezeway, which I think only my dad and brother truly appreciated. Needless to say, I don’t think my mother, sister or I were overly disappointed when the deerhead was relocated to Bill and Mary’s house.
Our Dad was a game warden. He would get calls at all hours to go to rescue some hurt or lost animal. Our property has been home to rabbits, baby deer, turkeys and quail. I’m not sure if the neighbors always appreciated the little petting zoo that we sometimes had. I can still remember the “bobwhite” type call the quails made. He would nurse all of the animals back to health and relocate them back into the wild.
Our Dad loved his dogs. He always had a dog by his side. We mostly had beagles growing up so they could assist on the hunting expeditions. We all almost fell off our chairs when he became attached to his latest dog, Taffy. Taffy is a lapso apso and by anyone’s standards qualifies as a froo-froo dog. Taffy goes to the dog parlor to get a haircut and comes back with a ribbon in her hair. Totally, not my dad’s style. But they had quite the bond. Taffy would follow him around the house and sit under his chair. He missed her a lot so we took Taffy to the rehab so he could see her. It made him so happy.
Our Dad loved Denville. He became a regular at the downtown diners. First Chris’s Kitchen, which turned into Nicks’ and then he moved over to the Cornerstone Café. He loved to sit and talk to the staff and to his friends over a good cup of coffee in the early morning. He loved that ritual. He and his friends would talk about all topics and try to solve the problems of the world. He carried the early morning coffee ritual with him into the hospital and to rehab, where we each took turns getting up and delivering his coffee by 6:30. He actually introduced my sister and I to the fact that 6:30 also exists on Saturday. Previously, we had assumed life doesn’t begin until after 10 on Saturday.
Our Dad was a partner to our Mom. After 44 years of marriage, they were still respectful and devoted to the vows that they had taken. My mom was his key supporter during his illness and he always counted on her to be there to hold his hand.
Our Dad became a grandpa. He enjoyed seeing his grandchildren. He enjoyed having family meals at the holidays when we would all get together. This summer, he drove over to Cooks Pond and would talk to Bill’s kids while they swam.
Our Dad was our Dad. He taught us to rollerskate, ride bikes and to drive. Most importantly, our dad instilled in us a sense of right and wrong, and taught us the importance of dependability, hard work, and friendship. He will always be with us as he is a part of who we are and what we have become. Job well done, Dad. We love you.

Hi Dad, I thought this poem was beautiful and it sounded like something you'd say to us now that you are no longer struggling to breath and have arrived in heaven...
Weep not for me though I am gone into that gentle night.
Grieve if you will, but not for long upon my soul's sweet flight. I am at peace, my soul's at rest. There is no need for tears.
For with your love I was so blessed for all those many years.
There is no pain, I suffer not,
The fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts,
In your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath
Remember not the strife.
Please do not dwell upon my death,
But celebrate my life.

Rest in peace, Dad. We all love you.
Love, Chris

Grandpa was my best buddy. The person that I could confide in, the person I knew would always be there and support me (even though he may not have always approved). Throughout the years, he taught me about compassion, patience, ingenuity, trusting others, as well as yourself and above all, respect. Besides mental and emotional lessons, he taught me of the life lessons he had learned himself. Teaching skills like fishing to an impatient little girl was not a simple task, but to grandpa, he'd sit there all day until you knew how to cast, watch the bobber, and reel in the line by heart. I remember my first trip to Lake George with Grandpa. We sat there for hours upon hours every day until I caught my very first fish, a bass. I remember that crazy smile that he had, telling and showing me that he was proud, without even saying it. And as for driving...i'm not exactly sure if it was the wisest move teaching and allowing me to drive his prized red truck. I can remember quite a few times when that beautiful, shiny truck, grandpa and I almost wound up in either the lake, the woods, or flying into oncoming traffic. No matter what trouble we got ourselves into, we always had a boatload of fun.
When Shannon, Ryan, Erin, and Caitlin were all born, they each became another light in his life. Shannon- a buddy to relax and eat root beer and butterscotch candies with, Ryan- a friend to share a manly bond with and show him the ways, Erin- Grandpa’s little artist, the one that would illustrate his crazy out there stories, and Caitlin- a partner in crime, the one that would commit the act of taking the candy from next to his favorite chair, get caught by Grandpa, but would never really get in trouble because she ran way too fast for him.
His amazing children, the trophies of his life, each held their own spots in his heart as well. My wonderful father, his first born, Will was his all around best friend. He taught him how to fish and hunt and helped him to get his very first nine pointer when he was just a mere seventeen years old. Terry, his first little girl, was his sports pal. Whether it was watching the pros like the NY Giants and the Yankees or watching her play throughout the years, they’d always have that special bond. Chrissy, the baby of the family was his personal medical adviser. Throughout his life, he’d slip in and out of trouble but she was always there to tell him what to do and how to do it, even though he was too stubborn to listen half the time. Mary, Will’s wife, as well as Chris, Chrissy’s husband played a huge role in his life.
Lastly, was Grandpa’s other half, the one that completed him, my grandmother Kathy. An amazing mother, spectacular grandmother, caring and compassionate friend, and just the all around best, she kept him in line (well most of the time). They were the town’s dynamic duo, known to all. They were and still are role models to everyone with their love so strong and their trust so deep. I know Grandpa loved her deeply, as much as one person possibly could.
We all loved William Covert no matter what name he went by. Whether it was Grandpa, Bill, Buddy, Dad, or Love of My Life, we’re all going to miss that sweet, wonderful, adventurous man in the shiny red truck. Places and events will never be the same without him, such as “the diner club”- the place where he could sit, discuss, and attempt to solve the problems of the world with his friends. And I’m sure that any coffee place is going to miss him, considering he drank 6 cups a day. But most of all will be the family and friends he treasured deeply. He will always be in our hearts until the end of time.
