Obituary of Louis J. Gross
Louis J. “Louie” Gross, passed away suddenly at Morristown Memorial Hospital on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at the age of 82.
Born in Yonkers to Joseph and Thelma (Ocuin) Gross, he had moved to Riverdale, NY, then to Parsippany and finally to Denville, NJ in 1977. He worked in the wholesale meat industry in New York City, Rochester, Chicago and Newark. In the early 1970’s he and his father went into the retail meat business and opened the Colonial Meat Market in Morristown. In 1983 they moved their business to Chester where he owned the Chester Meat Market until his retirement in 2018.
Louie loved nothing more in life than taking care of his best friend and wife of 58 years, BL (Kozik) Gross. They were inseparable and all who met them were inspired by their love story. He was a people person and was always making new friends wherever he went. He enjoyed riding his horses, working in his yard, food, watching the NY Yankees, traveling the western United States and exploring ghost towns, national parks and going to rodeos. In his younger years he enjoyed going out on his sailboat, and winter skiing. He also loved the Rocky movies, old western movies and classic country music. Louie was at his happiest when surrounded by his loving family and his loyal Newfoundland dogs, Stanley and Ralph.
He is survived by his beloved wife BL Gross of Denville, NJ, and his loving daughters Laura McCormick and Michael Barkley of Rockaway, NJ, and Melanie and her husband Kevin Smith of Roxbury, NJ. He is also survived by his grandchildren Joseph and Katelyn McCormick, Kathryn McCormick, Molly McCormick, Matthew McCormick, Kristy and Todd Burdette, Kevin and Victoria Smith, Sean and Alizia Smith, Jordyn Smith, as well as his great grandchildren Lainey, Kynlee, Mason, Jaxon, Logan, Tanner and Kyler.
