Five years of daily phone calls revealed a lot about our lives: past, present, regrets, plans and dreams. You adjusted quite well living in the historic district of Rockaway Borough, you even enjoyed hearing the train whistle as it passed in the morning. You recalled the fun times at “the house” with your beloved pets, especially your dog Harbo. You retold the content of every movie you watched re actors and country setting. Hence, our grandiose plans to visit Barcelona and Slovenia. Reality set in after the pandemic. Now you, Judi and I frequented local restaurants, street fairs, church bazaars, farmer markets as well as events at Lake Telemark. As you so often stated: hey, we outlived the pandemic, we survived the earthquake, might as well enjoy this time. During the last two weeks your phone calls became less frequent, you seemed more quiet. Not even trips to Shop Rite enticed you. We enjoyed one last cup of strong coffee together just days before your final call. Many times I took these calls for granted. Now, now I deeply miss our conversations.

Evelyn,
Although our paths didn't cross as often as I would have liked, I remember the three encounters, woven together by the thread of family bonds that transcend distance and time.
I was merely a child of nine or ten when you visited my grandmother in Germany with your mother. I remember that I admired your beauty and your fancy hippy american style deeply.
In 1987 I was backpacking with a friend through the USA and as a gracious host, you opened your home to us. You arranged for us a bbq that we could get to know your family, your daughter Jessica, and your friends. We had such a great time and felt so very special.
In 2006, our paths converged once more. This time, I visited the USA with my mom and my new husband. Guenther and I spent a wonderful time with you and Gary at your house. You were so kind to show us your favorite spots in New York. I will never forget how we were walking through the rain-soaked streets in Chinatown savoring delicious food.
Though our encounters were few, I always admired your free and unconventional spirit.
Rest in peace, dear Evelyn. Your spirit lives on in the echoes of laughter and the whispers of love. To live in the hearts of those we love is not to die.
With eternal gratitude and love,
Martina and Guenther
