I had the pleasure of teaching Matt in my fourth grade class, my first year in Riverview School. I have fond memories of that class and I remember Matt so well! I am saddened to learn of his passing. I am in awe to read about Matt's aspiring life. He accomplished so much in such a short lifetime. He did what he loved to do wholeheartedly! Rest in peace, Matt. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss.

One day Matthew came down to our lake front with his fishing pole and a box from of lures. When I asked Matt where they came from and he replied they are from my grandfather. He came back a few weeks later with his box and pole and I asked him if he was going fishing again. He said he really didn't like seeing the fish on the hook he thought it might hurt them so he really didn't want to catch any. It has been a privilege to have known Matt.

I grew up at Cedar Lake and was thrilled when, at the age of 12, Mrs. Novellino asked me if I was a babysitter. Matthew was a baby at the time and I LOVED spending time with him! Truth be told, sometimes I felt like he was "mine." He was just so cute and said the funniest things. I always admired his parents and their loving ways. Through the years, I'd think of Matthew and google his name - I was always in awe whenever I read anything about him. His service to others was so far above and beyond anything I'd ever known about anyone else... I was sure it was because he had such a good babysitter in his early years. :) I am so very sorry to hear of his passing and wish to extend my warmest condolences to his parents and his sisters and the rest of his family. Matthew sure lived a full life, a selfless life and one full of service to others. God bless Matthew, his wife and all. Trish (Conklin) Colucci Barbosa

Matthew was one of those special students that teachers never forget. He always treated others with a smile and would always lend a helping hand without expecting anything in return. My condolences to Matt's wife, his parents, sisters, grandmother and extended family and friends. I haven't seen Matt since our days at Pratt, but I've kept up with him through social media and stories that friends have told. At Pratt, I was always impressed with his essential decency, his kindness, his humor, and his levelheadedness. Over the years his sense of duty and of living a life of outward purpose has been inspiring and humbling. My heart goes out to all of you in mourning. May his memory ease your pain.

Growing up Matt was like a brother to me. From day one his kindness and thoughtfulness was an inspiration to all. I will be forever grateful for the adventures we had - hiking, camping, sailing, skiing. He taught me so much about all things outdoors and in life. I am still in awe thinking about his fearless rock-climbing. There was never a bad day or moment with Matt, only laughs.

He always had his mind set on bigger things and I’m proud to see how much he accomplished over the years and extraordinary missions and deployments he served. Thank you for serving our country Matt. I’m glad you did much good for this world. Very sad that your journey ended far too soon.

My deepest sympathy to Matt's family. I grew up with Matt in Cedar Lake in Denville. The summers at the lake were awesome when we were kids. That was the time of the year that all kids hung out together across all age groups and clicks faded away. It was a time when everyone was kid. RiP Matt you will be missed by many and loved always.

I haven’t seen Matt in a very long time but he was a great guy that I will never forget.
One year when we were kids i had invited the whole class but he was the only one that came. We had a great time and it was only because of him and his positive outlook. His Parents might’ve made him come but he still helped me make the best of it and I will never forget him for that.
Funny story that I will never forget is us on ski trip with school and Matt loses control and tries to sit down to make himself stop and sits on the back of the skis then goes flying towards the woods but manages to grab a tree on the way in but his skis popped off and went flying into the woods. He spent hours looking for them lol. I just wanted to add the reasons I will never forget him.
My deepest condolences to Matt’s wife and family.
Rest easy.
