Obituary of Enid J. Sternberg

Please share a memory of Enid to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Enid J. Sternberg passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at The Oaks Healthcare Center in Denville. She had shared 90 years of unconditional love, humor, laughter, and priceless memories with family and friends.

Born in Newark, Enid was raised in Union to the late John and Josephine Hirsch. After graduating from Union High School, she worked in numerous secretarial positions. She retired as the Secretary to the Dean of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. For many years, she lived in Piscataway before marrying Ralph Sternberg and settling down in Chatham. Upon her retirement, she took it upon herself to learn a new skill every year. And every year, she would take 12 months to master that skill before moving on to a new one. Enid was such a creative and gifted person. She was a talented painter, knitter and quilter. She even spun her own yarn. She loved to experiment and challenge herself. She liked to read and play games and had the best sense of humor. She truly was one of a kind. Enid also loved to cook and she was an excellent host, always having family and friends over for holidays, special occasions, and just for fun. Above anything else, spending time with her loved ones was her first priority. She will be forever missed and treasured in our hearts. Although we are deeply saddened, we take comfort knowing she is now reunited with her parents and siblings, John Hirsch and Nancy Morse.

She leaves only joyful memories to her adored nieces and nephews, Elizabeth “Betsi” Mettendorf, Patricia Flack, John “Jack” Hirsch, and Joseph Hirsch; and many extended family and dear friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the Spring. Please leave a condolence, light a candle, and share your favorite memory of Enid here to continue to celebrate the incredible life she endowed to us.
