Obituary of Rosemary Melendez

Please share a memory of Rosemary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Rosemary Melendez passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, February 1, 2021, at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville with her loyal family by her side. She had shared 66 years of unconditional love, infectious laughter, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.

Born in Long Island, NY to the late George and Ann O’Keefe. She was a twin to her sister, Patricia, and younger sibling to her brother, Michael. Born and raised in the Bronx. Rosemary graduated from St. Helena High School, Class of 1971. She met the love of her life, soulmate, and best friend, Ramon Melendez, on a sunny day in the Bronx. They were married on November 8, 1975, and soon left New York to settle into the White Meadow Lake section of Rockaway Township so that they might begin a family of their own. Rosemary had a very successful 30-year career in banking; she retired as Vice President from BNY Mellon Bank in Woodland Park, NJ. Although Rosemary excelled in her career, her real passion was her family; they were her pride and joy. She was most happy and fulfilled by the simpler aspects of life. Rosemary thrived on the priceless quality time spent with her dearest friends and family. She found comfort and joy in bringing life to her gardens and instilling the house with cheer for each passing season. One of her hidden talents was her knack for finding a good sale, a favorite past-time she shared with her daughter. Perhaps one of the most endearing qualities of Rosemary was her fiery, dauntless spirit; she was not afraid to face difficulties and held tight to an unwavering sense of justice. She was a confidant to all who knew her best; Rosemary was a shoulder to cry on but, perhaps even more than that, she spoke the truth as only she could see it. She provided comfort and solace when it was most needed, and yet was entirely unafraid to prod and nudge when it was warranted. As the saying goes, "Mother knows best," and Rosemary certainly made that abundantly clear throughout her years. Her passing is a deep, searing grief that nothing will ever truly mend. But where there is grief, there is also the unfettered happiness of her memory, and the comforting solace that she is always there, whispering (or, more accurately, Irish whispering) encouragement and pushing us forward to carry on. No one is ever truly gone, and Rosemary's presence will continue to be felt through all the days that follow.

She leaves a lifetime of joyful memories to her beloved husband of 45 years, Ramon; her beloved daughter, Michele, and her fiancé Ray; and many other extended family members and dear friends.
