On a Sunny October day……10/4/77
On a Sunny October Day, a young man attending Dartmouth College in Hanover New Hampshire met a friend that forever changed his life. This friend said: “I will never leave you; I will always be there with you.” (Hebrews 13:5 Easy)
On a Sunny October Day, a young man read these words over and over: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 NIV)
On a Sunny October Day, a young man prayed and claimed the promise: “As it says in the Bible: ‘The Lord God will save everyone who asks him for help.’” (Romans 10:13 Easy)
On a Sunny October Day, a young man who was my blood brother, became my brother in the Lord!
On a Sunny October Day, a young man received this promise: “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24 NIV)
On a Sunny October Day, a young man who would depart from us at the Lord’s appointed time, claimed the promise that we can be together again for all eternity. So until that time, rest in peace my brother!

Dear Vicki and family:
As you may know, Dave and I roomed together at Dartmouth all sophomore year and then junior year through the winter term. We were fraternity brothers at SAE, where he put up with many of the members of the Varsity Swimming team, including Hal Frazier and me. We had intense experiences growing up during those years, studying and partying hard. One of my fondest memories of Dave came one night when we were in our dorm room surrounded by other dorm mates who decided to debate Dave about God and religion. Like your husband and father, I was also raised in a Christian household, but like many of us at that age I was beginning to question my beliefs. Dave changed that for me and set me straight through his words. The faith and commitment he apparently showed your family was onfire that night; he stood toe to toe with the 5 or 6 other young people and convinced many of them with agnostic and atheist beliefs to question those beliefs.
I know that Jake had asked for memories and stories about who his dad was at Dartmouth. If you want to honor your father Jake, carry the compassion he had towards Dartmouth in your heart and be true to your friends and family like he demonstrated so well. Your Dad was a wonderful person and I am grateful that I got to know him all those years ago.
My sincerest condolences,
William Potter MD '79

Some lives and smiles shine brighter, they just do, and everyone notices and is drawn to them. Dave was one of those bright people. As a family man through and through, all of his relatives benefited from his true love and pride in his family. Vicki, we knew by the glow of your love on your wedding day that Dave was the guy for you. We've all been blessed by knowing David. Hold on to those bright and loving memories when darkness tries to take over. May God give you His peace that knows no understanding, now and forever. Jake, Dan, Ben and Vicki, reach out to your friends for comfort. No one knows what to say that can help but all of your friends are willing to be with you now and in the future.

Dave’s passing was a seismic shock. After years at a distance we had only days before completed plans to reunite our high school poker gang this summer and catch each other up on our lives (not to mention having a ton of present-day fun). We were already starting 2 hands down, and now it’s 3.
I have a lot of great memories of growing up with Dave. We were in so many things together – Sunday school and church, school, Little League, scouts (thanks Mrs. P for being our den mother!), band and more – that you might think we needed some space from each other. Yet the only 2 people who I’ve spent more time tossing balls around and playing sports with than Dave are my boys (but he’s way ahead with the eons of summertime we spent horsing around in his backyard pool). Through all that time I can’t recall Dave ever being cross or losing his cool with friends. He was so good natured and level-headed (and blessed with a good sense of humor) that he could always keep things in perspective. All that went into the mix he used to build a family and life of giving character. We need so many more people like him in our lives and communities.
It’s part of life that all things pass, but love endures. I hope all his friends and family can use that core of love for him and his love for them to get through the time of grief. Vicki, Jake, Ben and Dan, Mrs. and Mr. P, Ken and Don, my thoughts are with you and I pray that your hearts will be lifted up.
Growing up I could not have asked for a better friend than Dave.

I have known Dave since the fall of 1975 where we first met at college. On behalf of my family, and the entire Class of 1979 from Dartmouth College , we offer our heartfelt condolences to Vicki and the family. Dave was a genuinely fun, colorful, and interesting man. We laughed plenty together and I admired him. He lived by an unspoken motto of service above self. He has had the highest respect from all of us who knew him at Dartmouth. He worked tirelessly on behalf of the Dartmouth College Fund, achieving record results, and never sought recognition. We are enriched from knowing him and diminished with his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Philhower Family now and forever.

Dave was a great person, his enthusiasm and love for the people and things he cared for most were apparent to all. I'll miss his hellos in the early morning as the church was just waking up. Dave always surprised me and kept me on my toes. He would suddenly post was was going on in the church or what we needed. When we had our rummage sale for example he would post then tag me.
He was a no nonsense kind of guy who would just get it done.
I would often see both him and Viki walking together.
Dave your dedication and commitment will truly be missed.

Shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of a warm, giving man. Remembering Dave as a youth football coach being firm but fair with the young boys while teaching them the benefits of teamwork - having your buddies back. At home, he raised three kind, smart and ambitious young men...he and Vicki should be very proud of each of them. Rockaway Township lost a kind soul Monday. RIP Dave XO

Dave was a kind and loving man. He gave so much of himself to our church, often in small ways and without being asked. Many times when I was ushering and there was no one to collect offering upstairs I never had to ask Dave, he’d just come downstairs with the plate. I’ll miss watching him ring the church bell, especially when he was helping a kid . I often thought of him as one of First Presbyterian’s biggest cheerleaders So much love and prayers to his family - God bless you and keep you close
