Russ, I am missing you so much lately. Its getting more real as time passes that you are really gone. We may not have hung out a lot after you moved to PA, but I always knew I had you to talk to - a joke that only you would find funny (or get), or a bit of gossip too juicy not to pass on. When we did see each other, it was like no time had ever passed and our friendship was solid. Well, its been too long, and that makes me sad. We talk about you a lot and share funny Russ stories. You were one of a kind, and I am so honored that you considered me your friend. Miss you forever! Please tell John we say hey and miss him and love him too! Hope you two are having fun keeping heaven entertained! xox - ali

Dear Russ,
We went to LBI again this year for our family vacation. We really missed you this year even though you were only going to come down for a couple of days. We had the same house as last year and there were a lot of memories. We ran into Karen from the Acme down there and her and I did some crying together. So many people still miss you. I had a dream about you while were were there. We were all sitting on the beach and I looked over my right shoulder and you wer standing on the dunes waving to us. I'm hoping that meant that you were there with us. You're always in my heart and will be there forever. I love and miss you every day. Love, Mom

Happy Birthday! This is the first year since 1990 that I will not be celebrating your birthday with you. It has been very hard not to cry everyday over the past few months. Those tears usually end with laughs of all the good times we had. There is no bad memory I have with you. We had so many great times & they will always be close to my heart. It feels like just yesterday (fall 93) that we drove around in your doge omni trying to get lost in NJ. We came to the conclusion that it is next to impossible to get lost without coming across some major highway. I miss you brotha.

Dear Russ, Today is your birthday and I so miss you. I can still remember the day you were born. I remember going into labor at 1:45 in the afternoon and you were so anxious to get into the world that you were born 23 minutes later. I remember the nurses running down the hall with me to get me into the delivery room on time. I remember the doctor holding you up and saying "another boy" and me thinking I can't name you Sharon now. I don't think we had a boy's name picked out because everyone was so sure I was having a girl. You were born between shifts and I had to wait in the hallway until 3:00 before I could get into my room. I remember thinking this one is trouble already! You did have your mischievious ways at times but all you had to do was smile that big smile of yours and we couldn't stay mad at you for long. You brought so much laughter and fun into the family. I'll miss making your ribs/fried chicken and potato salad for your "birthday meal". I will miss calling you and leaving a message on your cell phone at 2:08 that you were officially another year older. I so miss everything about you every day. I hope someday I can get through a day without crying but that hasn't happened yet. I will love and miss you forever and ever. Love, Mom

I had met as a quasi-political figure in Sussex County and running New Jersey Department of Labor Offices in Sussex County, and a light supervisory role in Warren County. He was with the New Jersey Herald, and called me time-to-time. He was a throw back to the days of muckrakers. I have always been a fan of journalism and good journalists. I have met editors and reporters from a number of papers, including the NJ Herald, and the Express Times where Russ was a stellar and often a funny guy. My daughter out of college worked with him as the Herald's News Clerk before leaving for radio in Sussex and NYC. We both loved Russ, and will miss him. Journalism needs some more muckrakers, and journalists like Russ. Russ, we may have hardly knew you, but we will certainly miss you. If there is a rock and roll heaven then there must be a similiar place for journalists. Find it for us,Russ!

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I was thinking of your family this week. I was in the Federal Courthouse in Allentown on Wednesday, for a meeting involving the death of my husband, and Ed Sieger was there from the Express-Times. Normally Russ would cover anything involving my husband, and it reminded me of your tragic loss and the shock and pain you all must still be in. It is so hard to lose a loved one at such an early age - not that losing someone at any age is easy but to be able to say they lived a long and fulfilling life certainly makes it more acceptable, more understandable. What happened to Russ is just so unbelievably tragic my heart aches for your entire family. The pain will never go away - it will always be there, right under the surface - but as time goes on the pain will soften and become more bearable. Please know that you remain in the thoughts and prayers of many people. Russ was a wonderful person, and he will never be forgotten. May God bless your family. Take care. A thought and prayer for all who knew and loved Russ...."When I am gone, release me, let me go, I have so many things to see and do. You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears, be happy that we had so many years. I gave you my love, you can only quess how much you gave me in happiness. I thank you for the love you have shown, but now it's time I traveled on alone, So grieve a while for me, if you must, then let your grief be comforted by trust. It's only for a while that we must part, so bless the memories within your heart, I won't be far away for life goes on, so if you need me call, and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near and if you listen with your heart, you'll hear all of my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you must come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile and say, "Welcome Home".

We're so sorry for your loss, there's no words but maybe this little poem will bring some small comfort to you.
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I did not die.

I can honestly say there was never a dull moment in our conversations. Another reaso it was easy to bod with him was because we were both raised in NJ and we both loved the Yankees. There are so many thoughts here, I can't say it better. I can only say it again. My husband and I met at The Express-Times and were there when Russ started. After we left the paper, I'm so sorry that we didn't keep better touch with our family there. No matter how little we see each other, I carry a little of everyone from that newspaper in my heart.
Russ was no exception, to be sure. I agree with everyone here, Russ was sweet, passionate and compassionate. People have come together over his death like I've never seen before. The sentiments here and all over The Express-Times are a true testament to how Russ lived his life. It's also a testament to his family. Meeting the Flanagans yesterday pulled it all together -- how Russ was raised to be so kind. You all, somehow, managed to console us when we were there to help you. Your humor and graciousness made yesterday just a little easier. Thank you for that gift and thank you for the gift of Russ.

1) That time you tried to convert me from coffee to tea with honey at Panera Bread.
2) The first night we hung out at Drinkys. Thanks for walking me to my car. You're such a good friend.
3) Playing pictionary at my apartment. You have serious skills :-)
4) Listening to "The Killers" in your car after Porter's.
5) That snowy morning at the "Holliday Inn" when I woke up with a note written in pink highlighter that started with "Sorry this is in highlighter but it was the only thing I could find..."
6) Studying for the copyediting test together. Nerd alert!
7)The Don Pablo incident. Just kidding.
8)That crazy night in Reading.
9) The countless nonsmoking cigarette breaks outside The Express-Times
10) And my absolute favorite: the walk back to my car after the bar crawl in Bethlehem. No one else can make a simple act so entertaining.
I feel so blessed to have been a part of your life, Russ. Rest in peace, buddy. Love, VonMeowsolf

Some years ago, I believe it was 2003 or 2004, Russ Flanagan and I had this crazy idea we were going to write a hit movie about pro football in the 1920s.
For years we were very fired up about it. We had great ideas for characters and action sequences. We had a fabulous plot to keep the audience enthralled. Everyone we spoke to about the project seemed to think it was a wonderful idea, well worth pursuing.
Then we learned about “Leatherheads,” a George Clooney film soon to be making the rounds in theaters, and I remember feeling that awful feeling reporters feel when they get scooped on a big story.
Russ and I talked about abandoning our script. After “Leatherheads,” no matter how good our script was, it would always seem to a potential buyer that we were mere copycats, I said.
But after some lengthy discussions we decided to continue with our project anyway, if for no other reason than to find out if we could see our first collaborative movie project through to the end.
Russ was like that; he hated to give up on something he believed in.
Besides, he reasoned, we had no idea what “Leatherheads” was all about, so our 1920s football movie might be -- no, would be -- better. And movie audiences would realize that, of course, and sing our praises as its authors.
But we never finished the project. The dozens of character studies and scenes we wrote, mostly while drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes at an Allentown diner at 3 a.m., are now gathering electronic dust in a nearly forgotten subfolder in my computer.
It wasn’t for lack of trying, either. Russ and I must have worked hundreds of hours on this idea. We fretted minor details, debated plot devices, wrote dozens of rewrites and generally fooled ourselves into thinking we might actually, someday, be famous scriptwriters in Hollywood, doing lunch and driving around in expensive cars.
We envisioned the day when our script would be sold, the day when we would see our names on the big screen, like his heroes Joel and Ethan Coen or George Lucas.
It was great dream.
But some dreams don’t come true.
Sometimes, just when it seems all is well and right with the world, the unthinkable happens.
Sometimes, right after your favorite football team wins the Super Bowl, right after a great weekend celebrating with family and friends, sometimes before you walk into a big trial that could cement an already impressive career as a court reporter, sometimes when you’re in the prime of life and enjoying the esteem of colleagues and critics alike, sometimes you die.
It was my very good fortune to have known Russ Flanagan, and it is everyone’s sad fate to have lost him.
The autopsy was inconclusive. No drugs, no foul play, no apparent cause of death whatsoever. Russ Flanagan, age 33, with movie star good looks and the proverbial soul of a poet, simply dropped dead in his tracks, according to reports, published this week with heartfelt sadness by his stunned colleagues, who now dutifully report the sorrows of those many, like me, who will never spend another moment dreaming crazy dreams with him again.

I remember Russ always being around until he moved away. Our families are 2 of the families that live near eachother. There are 4 families that have been really close forever since I was a little girl. I can remmeber Russ and the other kids, Mark and John and Jason all playing together outside as children and I would sit and watch them. Some more recent memories that I have been told is when Russ and Jason got together they put Mark in the garbage can. I also remember Russ coming over to my house and scaring away a mouse for me. I will miss him but will always know his spirit will be with me forever.

My favorite thing about Russ was how he found a way to include everybody in whatever he was talking about or doing.
He also had this great cackling laugh he used to turn the screws whenever he decided to dish out some playful guff. I last heard it when he teased Eileen for wearing an Eagles sweatshirt the night before the Super Bowl.
He had a nickname for nearly everyone. The first time he met me, my first week at the E-T, inclusive as he was, he tried to give me one: Dabrill. "It's like debris, only dabrill," he said then cackled. It didn't really stick but I was glad he brought me in the loop my first week on the job.
Russ was the man.

My heart goes out to Russ’ family – I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Russ was truly one of a kind. He had an infectious laugh and was so incredibly witty. All my memories of Russ are peppered with laughter. You knew you were going to have a good time when you were with him. He was so easy to be around, even if you hadn’t seen him in a while, you always picked up like no time had passed. He was so well read and had such a passion for life that conversations always flowed so effortlessly – you could discuss pretty much anything, usually laughing all the while. Russ was a wonderful wordsmith… the stuff that would come out of his mouth – so funny and so witty. The world is an emptier place without you here, Russ, but you left behind a lifetime of wonderful memories we’ll use to try to ease the pain and fill that void. I feel honored to have had a friend like you. God Bless you, Russ! May you rest in peace. You will forever be missed. You will never be forgotten.

Wednesday, February 6, 2008, will be one of those days that I will not forget for some time to come. I was working at my desk with the radio on in the background when I heard the tragic news concerning Russ Flanagan. I was shocked and saddened to learn of his untimely death.
I never met Russ in person and yet, I felt as though I knew him very well. You see, ever since he became a police reporter he would call me four or five times a week to gather information concerning police related incidents, which occurred in the Borough. As a result, I became very friendly with Russ. I remember the very first call he ever made to me. I thought to myself, “This guy is a genuinely sincere individual.” As I got to know him and respect him, I learned that I could discuss issues of a sensitive nature with Russ and I could trust him to report it in a manner that was accurate, fair and considerate.
Russ was a personable individual and many times we discussed matters other than that of “news.” Russ never failed to ask, “How are you today?” Knowing Russ, I knew the question was not that of a rhetorical nature. He was sincere and I knew he was hoping for a positive reply. Through our conversations, I learned where he grew up and where he was from; we discussed sports and a myriad of other topics. I would look forward to his call. On occasion, Russ would tell me that when the opportunity presented itself, he was going to travel to Pen Argyl and meet with me personally. I remember the day Russ informed me that he was assigned to the Court House. I asked if he was pleased with the assignment and without hesitation, he stated, “Yes, I’m looking forward to it; maybe someday we will be able to meet at the Courthouse.” Sadly, that never occurred. My only regret is that I never got to meet Russ in person. I am sure that he will truly be missed as he was respected by all who knew him. He was a gentleman and an outstanding person.
May God Bless and Look After Russ,

You were so full of ambition and personality and you had one great sense of humor. You were also thoughful to a fault. I remember the time you tried to get to my school as fast as you could in the pouring rain, with only somewhat of a clue of where you were going, even though you just had a problem at home...just because you said you would be there with me. You missed the entire play, but it really meant so much that you were waiting by the door with a smile on your face when I came out. You have touched my life as well as many others and you will be strongly missed, friend. Two other memorable things I can also thank Russ for: 1) learning how to whistle correctly (it became a mission) 2) being inspired to quit smoking only two weeks ago. Thank you Russ.

There is an old saying that only the good die young. This is certainly true about Russ. I had the privilege of working with Russ at the New Jersey Herald. We covered many news stories together, he was the reporter I was the photographer, I always knew that if there was breaking news that Russ was right behind me going out the door. Russ was the person who gave me my nickname of Knoll. Russ questioned me about why I use my maiden name of Hill for my byline when my married name is Little. When I explained that it would have sounded like an Indian name, "Little Hill" if I had hyphnated it, he dubbed me Knoll, which we all know means a little hill. This was Russ, witty, funny, a great friend who had a infectious personality and the best laugh you would ever want to hear. He will be sorrily missed, my condolences to his family and friends.

I covered Northampton County Court for eight years and have always paid particularly close attention when someone new took over the beat. Russ was an excellent courthouse reporter. His stories were accurate, interesting and among the most read in the pages of The Express-Times. Court reporters spend more time in the courthouse than they do in the newsroom. Every time Russ showed up here in the office, he lit up the place. I've been told it was the same at the courthouse. We will miss him terribly. I will say a prayer every morning at 5:30 a.m. for Russ, his family and his friends. I am honored to light this candle in celebration of his life.

I had the privilege of working with Russ at the New Jersey Herald. At that time seven years ago, I was his Front Page editor working the night shift and Saturday beat and he was a very new reporter. I remember my first night on the job Kenny Rogers was supposed to have a concert at the Fairgrounds and it had gotten cancelled because of rain and so I wrote what I thought was the most information headline … “Kenny knows when to fold them” and the next day Russ came into the newsroom (I had not yet met him) and with his big infectious smile he threw the copy on my desk and said, “this headline is brilliant – we are so going to be friends.” And we were … Russ used to love when I would concept my headlines out loud for him to critique. One night we had a photo that showcased this local farm and the farmers daughter was holding a big basket of apples, well she happened to be really well endowed and so I mocked up the front page and left it on Russ’ desk with the headline that read “How About Them Apples” – he kept that on his wall of honor right next to Princess Leia for the longest time. He had a great sense of humor. I actually looked forward to coming into work every night just to banter with him. He was intelligent and insightful and an excellent reporter. The last time I saw Russ was at a colleagues wedding, on New Years Eve a couple of years ago. We sat together as we did for so many nights in the Newsroom and we laughed about so many things that had happened while we were on the desk. My final memory of him is dancing with him as midnight struck – looking back now I can’t think of a better way to remember a beloved friend. I am no longer a Front Page editor but if I had to write a headline for Russ today it would probably say, “God Recruits Really Good Guy”

The thing says "share a memory," so here we go. Russ and I wound up at Croc Rock one night to see Anthrax. Actually, we were each there to see different opening bands. The band I went to see played; the band he came to see didn't show. But he hung out the whole night anyway, and we spent the entire time making fun of the aging mullet heads in the mosh pit and the teen-agers who were condemned to stay there because it was the only under-21 area. Good times.

Please accept my most sincere and heartfelt condolences on your loss. I am so very sorry to hear about Russ. He was the reporter who covered the shooting death of my police officer husband in 2005, so I had a significant amount of contact with him over a 12-18 month period. He was very kind and compassionate when asking me questions about my husband. The one thing I so vividly remember about him is how soft and warm his eyes were and how gentle his smile - he seemed to genuinly care about the pain my children and I were in and was mindful to not say anything to make the situation worse. He was a wonderful journalist - I always knew when Russ was writing an article about my husband that it would be fair and accurate without being unnecessarily inflammatory. I can't imagine the pain your family is in right now and I hope you get some answers soon about what caused his untimely death. He was a wonderful young man who touched many lives - you can be so proud of all he has accomplished. You are all in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time and - though it may not seem possible now - as time goes on the pain in your hearts will ease. Russ will be with you forever in your thoughts, your words, your hearts, your dreams and your memories.
