Obituary of John "Bill" William Quinn

John W. "Bill" Quinn, Jr. John William "Bill" Quinn, Jr. passed away on November 8, 2014 at St. Joe's Carondelet Hospital in Tucson, AZ after a brief illness, at the age of 93. Bill was born in Newark, NJ and raised in Rainbow Lakes in Morris County. After graduating from Morristown High School, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II in 1943 and 1944, being deployed in convoys delivering supplies and materiel to allied troops in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters. After the war, he and his wife Margaret raised three sons in the bucolic community of Mount Tabor, NJ. An avid ice hockey fan, he became the goalkeeper for the amateur Mount Tabor Athletic Club, helping them to several championships. He spent nearly his entire career in the shipping business, as a steamship charter broker, and commuted daily to Manhattan for 35 years. After his retirement in 1982, he and his wife Margaret moved from Morris County to Milford, PA, while also spending winters in Green Valley, AZ near two of their grandsons. Bill eventually moved back to New Jersey to the town of Branchville in Sussex County, where he resided for four years before relocating to Tucson, AZ in 2012. The son of the late John W. Quinn, Sr. and Dorothy (Dickerson) Quinn, he was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Margaret ("Peg") in 2002 and his eldest son John B. in 2007. He is survived by his sister Doris (and her husband Stanley) Stevens of Chuluota, FL and his two sons Robert H. and his long-time partner Carol LaStarza of Branchville, NJ and Daniel W. and his wife Dee of Tucson, AZ. Additional survivors are three grandsons, Jared W. Quinn and his wife Christine of Easthampton, MA and Justin D. Quinn and Christopher J. Quinn, both of Tucson, AZ. He leaves behind one great granddaughter, Alexandra J. Quinn of Easthampton, MA and a host of admiring nieces, nephews and friends. With an uncanny ability to remember names, faces, and birth dates, he rarely forgot someone he had met, and all who knew him loved him as he was a true gentleman, with a twinkle in his eye who knew how to enjoy life. A recent acquaintance described Bill as "one of the most charming Irishmen she has had the pleasure of knowing." Our beloved "Faz," who brought joy to so many people, will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, family members request that donations in Bill's memory be made to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, 99 Sparta Avenue, Newton, NJ 07860. A Celebration of Bills life will be held on Sat. Nov 22, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave. Denville, NJ. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
