Arline Olive Cowell, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 7th, 2014. A Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014 at 11 am at Church of The Saviour, 155 Morris Avenue, Denville, NJ. Born in Providence, RI on July 6th, 1922, she grew up on State street, the only child of her parents Harry and Marie (Olsen) Cowell. Arline began her secondary education at a local college in Rhode Island, but was soon successfully chosen for an engineering program known as the Cadettes at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The program had been established by the Curtis Wright Company due to a lack of engineers in the US created by WW II. She worked for Curtis Wright in Caldwell, NJ for a few years and then left to begin a career as a computer engineer at what was then Bell Labs, now Alcatel- Lucent. She was inducted into the Society of Women Engineers in 1952 and remains a member today. She was generous with her time and had many interests, including nature and music. She was an active member of the Municipal Gardens in Denville, NJ where she lived, and was also a long time member of the Morris Choral Society. She sang in the choir at Church of the Saviour in Denville, NJ, along with the churches in Sebastian, Florida and New Milford, Pennsylvania where she would vacation. She trained as a Pastoral minister and responded to the spiritual needs of the community; especially for those that were elderly and infirmed by bringing her prayers and enthusiasm for life to them when they could not come to her. She has been a consistent and supportive member of both the Audubon Society and Nature Conservancy. She traveled extensively throughout her life. Arline is predeceased by her lifetime friend and companion, Ms. Junia Pruden. She had a giving spirit and a zest for life. She will be sorely missed. She is survived by many loving and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Audubon Society, of which she was a life time member. To leave a message of condolence, please go to www.normandean.com
