Dan P. Winans, 70, died on Thursday May 29, 2014, at Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover, NJ following a brief illness.
Dan was born in Orange, NJ to Edwin and Helen Stoll Winans and grew up in Florham Park before moving to the Cedar Lake section of Denville in 1970.
He was Staff Manager for N.Y. Telephone Corp. Television Studio in New York City where he retired in 1994. After his retirement he did some free lance television productions and later worked in customer service department for Estes Express. He had also worked as a temp for Wyndham Hotel Group.
Dan has been a 52 year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hanover where he has served in many capacities. He had served as a Sunday School Supertentendant as well as a Deacon and a trustee for the Session and currently served as the Clerk of the Session.
He has also been very active with Boy Scouts of America. He was the Boy Scout Leader for Troop #118 in Denville for many years and he has been active with the Patriot Path Council Boy Scouts here in Morris County up until his recent illness. He was a unit commissioner, served on the High Adventure Team, and was on the Camping Committee. He was a member of the James E West Society and Vigil Order of the Arrow. He just received the Silver Beaver Award this past weekend.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years Betsy Coss Winans as well as his children and their spouses Lori and John Donaldson of Rockaway Twp. and Brian and Brigitte Winans of Andover as well as his grandchildren Ashlyn Donaldson, Kaylee Donaldson and Liam Winans. A grandson John Robert Donaldson Jr. died in 2000.
Family and friends are visiting on Sunday June 1, 2014 from 2 to 6 PM at the Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave. Denville, NJ 07834. All other services are private.
