Deeply welcoming comes to mind as I picture coming into the Paulson house, to the dock at the island, or even when seeing Jean at Anne's home. Jean's melodic voice would crumble a cement wall, her enthusiasm for connection turned visitors into mush. Yes I guess to repeat, Jean made a big impression on me. The whole Paulson family, however made me feel the same, Jean is in you all and... so long ago... I started feeling part of your special family.

I was introduced to Jean Paulson 40 years ago while in college. OMG I was instantly treated like part of a loving family. One time Jean (with her singsong, playful voice) convinced me to come on a ski trip ... when I had to finish a thesis... she presided by keeping me in a room to work when not skiing with the family: WOW it was the best experience ever. Every visit with her was so special, present and encouraging... Jean was a convincing negotiator and always made me feel special and appreciated. Thank you for the fabulous times.

Jean Paulson, or "Mrs. P" as we all knew her, was for me and my family the very spirit of Halsey Island and lake Hopatcong. Our next door neighbor on the island for over a decade in the '80s and '90s, she was the ultimate authority and source of wisdom and guidance as well as a truly good friend and mentor to us all: adults, children or dog. Any one of us felt entirely free to wander over to spend time with Mrs.P.... whenever.
The story that best sums up what Jean meant to us, of many that come to mind, doesn't even feature her directly. We adults were sitting on the front porch chatting with the parents of a boy who had been staying with us, when a commotion erupted down on the dock. The boy had gotten a splinter in his foot. My three children came hustling up the stairs to the porch, helping the limping boy hop smartly along, crying "he has a splinter - we need Mrs. P! Mrs.P!" The four of them rushed past us to the Paulson's house, where they knew the best first aid awaited. Flabbergasted, the boy's father objected meekly "but I'm a doctor!" His wife stammered "and I'm a nurse!" No matter, the rescue party sped on to the Paulson's, where Mrs. P quickly set things right!
One of the reasons I fervently hope to get to Heaven is to be able to share eternity with such a wonderful person. Jean, your light shined brighter than most down here. I can only imagine its glory up there!

It is with great sadness that we learned of Jean's passing. She was truly one of the great women of Lake Hopatcong. We will always treasure the support that she gave us when we were Commodore of the Yacht Club and the care and love that she put in to the Commodore's Ball when we finished our term. She was an invaluable support for The Women's Auxiliary and was always helpful as the parliamentarian to keep us on track. Jean was a one of a kind and her friendship is something that we both truly valued. We know that Fred was patiently waiting for his lady to join him and there is comfort in that thought. Please know that we will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.
