Obituary of Gwendolyn J. Blume
Gwendolyn Jane Blume passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home in Denville surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 12, 2017. She was 92 years old.
Born in Minneapolis, MN and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY by her father, the late Matthew O’Connell and her beloved aunt, the late Martha O’Neil. Gwen has been a longtime area resident. In 1959 she settled down with her husband, the late John Frederick in Boonton Township to raise their family. While in Boonton Township, they were members of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Once she became a Denville resident, she was a member of St. Catherine of Siena RC Church in Mountain Lakes. A proud member of the Peace Pipe Country Club, Gwen was an avid golfer with her husband. They also golfed at Picatinny Arsenal on the weekends while she was employed there for 15 years as an Administrative Assistant. Gwen loved to play Bridge. She was a very kind hearted person and volunteered at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville up until age 90. She loved the service animals at the hospital and was devoted to her yellow lab, Greta, and her beagle, Moochie. In her last two years, Gwen was blessed with her wonderful caregiver, Lydia. Above anything else in her life, was her family. They were her pride and joy. She will continue to live on in our hearts and souls forever.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, John Frederick, and her siblings, Brigid Patricia, Eileen Martha, Kathleen Florence, Daniel John, and Robert Emmett, left to continue her legacy are her loving children, John F. Blume, Jr. and his wife Anna of Geneva, NY, Michael E. Blume and his wife Melissa of Rockaway, Louise Watson and her husband Hank of Ithaca, NY, and Eileen Metzgar and her husband Rich of Flanders; her cherished grandchildren, Jimmy, John, Matt, Daniel, Haley, and Zach; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 20th at 10 am at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 10 N Pocono Rd, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046. Public Visitation will take place on Friday, May 19th from 4 - 7 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services. Burial will be private. Memorial Donations can be made in her memory to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) by way of www.inmemoryof-memorial.org.
