Obituary of Charles Howard Lalin
Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles (Chuck) Lalin, 74, died September 10, 2012 in Rockaway, NJ. He was born May
14, 1938, in Brooklyn, NY to Irwin and Evelyn Lalin.
Throughout his life, Chuck was an accomplished athlete and competitive sportsman. His
passion for the game of golf was undeniable. His golf game was surpassed only by his
ongoing desire to share the enjoyment of the game with others.
Chuck received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University and a
MS in Electrical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering. At Clarkson he was
a member of both Varsity Basketball and Baseball teams. As a senior he set the school
record of 7 straight games with a pinch hit. He was also a member of Lambda Iota
(Delta Upsilon) fraternity and remained close friends with many of his brothers until his
passing.
During his early career with various U.S. defense contractors, Chuck led projects that
were integral in helping the United States put Apollo astronauts on the moon in the late
1960's. Chuck did however find the corporate world unfulfilling, and in 1972 decided
to switch careers and enter the then new field of financial planning. So began a 40
year successful career as an advisor, working with individuals and families and helping
them to reach their financial goals. He had a relentless drive to continuously exceed the
expectations of those who entrusted him with their savings and investments. Chuck had
the self awareness to stay true to the fundamentals of investing and not get caught up
in the latest fad. That and an unstoppable work ethic allowed him to achieve whatever
he set his mind to.
Chuck balanced the last 17 years living both in Rockaway and in Sarasota, Florida,
surrounded by friends and family. He and his wife, Lori, enjoyed trading the annual chill
of the northeast for the white sand beaches of the west coast of Florida. There, they
enjoyed many wonderful winters together, both on and off the golf course.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Lori; a daughter Debbie Finkel and her husband David; a son Mark Lalin and his wife Lorraine; and 5 grandchildren. He is also
survived by a brother Hill S. Lalin and a sister Jody Tiedemann.
