Dennis Ulversoy - 1955 -2012
Born in Brooklyn, NY to Norwegian parents, Dennis moved to Marcella, NJ at the age of 2. His parents are Alfred and Harriet, and he has 2 brothers, Allan and Philip, and a sister Vivian. Dennis attended the Rockaway Twsp. school system and graduated from Morris Knolls High School in 1973.
As a child he was always interested in building things. In High School he worked for a neighbor as a builder's apprentice where he learned the ins and outs of quality workmanship. After high school Dennis attended Stevens Institute of Technology and graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1977, and has remained a great supporter of the college.
After college he began working in Boston for Turner Construction, but after 2 years Dennis decided to return to NJ and start his own home building business.
He met Susan in 1982 and they were married on May 23, 1987.
Dennis and Susan chose Denville as their home and bought and renovated a lovely home in Cedar Lake. Dennis was very involved in the Cedar Lake Community Club and was on the Board for over 20 years, 4 of which he served as President of the Club. They built two more homes in Cedar Lake, and have lived there and raised their 2 sons, Leif, born in 1988, and Sean, born in 1990.
In 1996 Dennis had the opportunity to work for a commercial construction company in New York, and after a few years he bought part of the company and moved it to New Jersey, where it became Candor Construction Group and grew to a large group of employees. He worked tirelessly to keep the company going and had great admiration and compassion for his employees.
Through the years Dennis has been very supportive of his parents. The family has continued the traditions of Norway and has traveled back there many times, the most recent being in November of 2011, in the height of his illness. He accompanied his parents and brother there for a dedication for Norwegian War Veterans, of which his father is one. He was a member of the Sons of Norway Nor Bu Lodge in Lake Telemark and was instrumental in rebuilding the lodge when it burned down.
Dennis has been a wonderful, loving husband, father and friend to many and everyone he has met has felt his love and joy for life. Dennis was always the first person to reach out a hand and help in any way.
As the boys got older, Dennis and Susan ventured out and joined the Lake Hopatcong Antique and Classic Boat Society and immediately volunteered to be on the board. Dennis had a dream of he and the boys building a Norwegian fishing boat some day to use on Lake Hopatcong. In 2011 Dennis and Susan were welcomed into the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club and had many enjoyable outings with friends from the lake.
Dennis was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May of 2011 and had a very difficult year battling the disease. Throughout this trying time he was insistent on going to work every day and supporting his wife and family and friends with a smile and a positive word. His strength was amazing, his outlook was upbeat and he never complained or asked why me?
Dennis is survived by his wife Susan, his sons Leif and Sean, his parents Harriet and Alfred, his brothers Philip and Allan and his sister Vivian.
Dennis's funeral will be conducted from the Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ www.normandean.com, (please light a candle in memory of Dennis on website), on Monday May 14th at 9am for a 10am Mass of Christian Burial service at St. Mary's Church Denville, NJ.
