Obituary of Floyd Joseph Sedwick

Floyd Joseph Sedwick, 80, passed away peacefully at home in Denville, N J on June 6, 2011 with his loving family by his side. Funeral services will begin at 10AM on Thursday June 9, 2011 at Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave Denville, NJ 07834 and then going to St. Mary's Church in Denville for an 11AM Liturgy of Christian Burial Mass. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9PM. Please light a candle in his memory at: www.normandean.com. Floyd "Joe" was born on August 8, 1930 in New Castle, Pa. to Floyd W. and Virginia (Nogaj) Sedwick. Joe received his B.S. in education from Slippery Rock University in1952 after which he joined the U. S. Navy and was stationed in Philadelphia, Pa. and Guantanamo, Cuba. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and returned to the New Castle, Pa. area. He taught in Mt. Jackson, Pa. for one year and then moved to New Jersey in 1957, settling in Montville. At that time he became a teacher in the Kinnelon Public Schools and began to pursue a Master's degree in Education at William Paterson University which he received in June, 1959. Joe retired from Kinnelon on January 1, 1990 after 33 years of service. He was a Kinnelon representative to the Morris County Council of Education Associations for many years. In 1961 he moved to Denville where he raised his family and was an ardent supporter of his children's and grandchildren's athletic, cultural and academic pursuits. He spent many summers at his vacation home in South Seaside Park, NJ where he enjoyed playing golf, boating and fishing. He was a spirited fan of the Mets, Jets, and Devils. He was an avid history buff who enjoyed being quizzed by his family. Joe is survived by his beloved and cherished wife of 51 years, Mary Jane (Pierz) and his children Gerard Sedwick of Hardwick, NJ, Christopher and Dawn Sedwick of Denville, Mary Beth Sedwick and Helen Wortham of Narberth, Pa. and Joanne and Jason Ervey of Andover, N J. He was the loving grandfather of Danielle, Benjamin, Hannah, Julia, Sean, Lindsey, Matthew and Alex. He was predeceased in 2004 by his son Martin, who is survived by his widow, Shelley of Glendale, Az., his parents Floyd and Virginia Sedwick and his brothers Robert and Louis. There will be a celebration of Joe's life at the family home on Thursday, June 9th at 1:30 pm.
