I went to the Newark Police Academy on Eighteenth Ave in 1963 and Jim was a fireman. We would talk once in awhile downtown. He liked to bust my chops and I got my licks in also. Take care Jim.

I have a lot of memories of Uncle Jim. I will share two of them.
When I was 14 I went to Paris, France on a high school trip I paid for with paper route money. Of course I sent back postcards. Grandma Whalen's brother Jimmy Finn who was a well known miser saw the postcard and complained how my trip was a waste of money. That summer we went to party at Uncle Jimmy Finn's and when we got out of the car, Uncle Jimmy Whalen came over and told me the story. He also told me that if Uncle Jimmy Finn asked about my trip I was to lay it on thick and tell him how I travel all over the world.
My second memory involves two visit he made to my house in Bath, Maine; once with my Pop and once with Michael. I was fixing it up. I never asked, but one day I came home from work and he and my father had cleaned up several rooms and started in on some repair work. I remember sitting on my deck with Uncle Jim and Michael and watching the Kennebec River rolling by, drinking beer and talking about how much the military had changed and stayed the same from his service to mine.
Rest in peace Uncle Jim. Hope you and Pop are having fun and drinking beer with Uncle Dinny.

My condolences to the Whalen Family. I met Jim when I was good friends with his neighbors, The Getchs. Jim had a good sense of humor & always made me laugh. He was a very caring person too & cared for his neighbors & watch over them. Also I was over there not to long ago & I had a nice conversation with Jim. He was sick & still had his sense of humor. I loved it when he restored the old fire truck. I use to go over & watch him. That was his love rebuilding the truck & cars. Well, RIP Jim. I will miss your smiles & stories. God Bless You & Your Family. Love. Karen Reinert

My condolences to the Whalen family, I remember all the years of work and how slowly Jim restored the American La France Fire Pumper. I would visit my grandfather, Bill Getch, who lived next door and go over to Jim’s garage and see how the fire truck was progressing. I remember seeing it in the parade after it was finished and thinking about how much work it took to get it to that point.

Dear Kate, Michael, and family, Our deepest sympathy at Jim's passing. We have a photo of Jim driving Old Betsy up Hewetson Road and stopping in front of our house so all the neighborhood kids could climb on.
They loved it. Thanks for the memories.
