Clarence A. "Larry" Haverly Jr.
Age: 86
Denville, NJ
Clarence Adam Haverly Jr., known as Larry, founder and President of Haverly Systems, Inc., and known worldwide in the Operations Research industry, passed away Friday April 15, 2011. He passed away peacefully, in spite of cancer, while in his sleep at home in Denville NJ, with family and friends in attendance.
Larry was born in Columbus Ohio, and grew up under difficult times during the Great Depression. He persevered and went on to graduate from Ohio State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and later with a Masters in Business Administration. He served in the Navy during World War II as a radar specialist. After the war he worked at Merck Pharmaceuticals in Rahway, NJ where he participated in bringing Cortisone and Vitamin B-12 to market. After that he worked at Esso Petroleum, and later Esso Research (now Exxon). This was an early time of use of computers in the industry and Larry quickly became an expert in this area. He left Esso in 1962 to start his own company Haverly Systems Inc. which was founded with his creating the first ever computer modeling language for developing Linear Programming (LP) models, used to optimize industrial processes. Techniques he pioneered are still in frequent use. His company became successful and became known worldwide in its field, and continues today with offices in the US, Europe, and Asia, and headquarters in Denville, NJ.
While at Merck he was a member of the flying club, and there met Angela Haverly (nee Filios), also in the flying club, and they married in 1956. For their wedding and honeymoon, they together flew a small Cessna plane from NJ to Massachusetts, and then from there to the Grand Canyon and back.
Larry was a successful manager in Denville Little League baseball, and led the Denville All-Star team to its then best ever statewide finish.
He was also active in politics and was President of the Taxpayers Political Action Committee of New Jersey. During this time he led many rallies in Trenton to promote limited Government and reduced taxation.
His work at Esso and then with Haverly Systems took him overseas for many business trips, and he traveled extensively throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia, frequently with wife Angela, and sometimes also with son Victor. His led his company to receive the Ronald Reagan "E Award" for Excellence in Exporting.
Larry was a dedicated, loving, and beloved family man, and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by wife Angela Haverly of Denville, sister Jean Haverly of Carroll, OH, family friend Phyllis DiAngelo of Indianapolis, IN, and son Victor and granddaughters Olivia and Angela Haverly, of Ventura, CA.
The family will be receiving guests to celebrate Larry's life and memory on Tuesday April 19 with visitation from 3 pm to 6 pm and service at 6 pm, at the Norman Dean Funeral Home, 16 Righter Ave. Denville, NJ. www.normandean.com. A graveside service will be held at Denville Cemetery Wednesday April 20 at 10 am.
