I am so sad about Russ. He had such an amazingly expansive personality. All those nights my brother and I spent playing with Missy and John, while our parents had marathon conversations... I felt so happy listening to their voices rising and falling in uproarious debate. My parents' friendship with Russ showed me how important it is to make time to be with people who understand you, respect you, love you, and also challenge you. I am sorry not to be able to attend the services tomorrow, but I am sending big metaphysical hugs to Libby, Kathy, John, and Missy. Take good care of yourselves. XXOOO

The Pleasure of His Company
Our 40 yrs. of friendship, beginning as neighbors on Park Hts. Ave. in Dover --conversations about Politics, Religion, Nuclear Power & Chernobyl, Crows, Chinese Art, Faulkner & Solzhenitsyn, American Indians and The West etc. -- intense, sometimes heated, but always interspersed with good cheer and laughter.
We could count on Russ to play the devil's advocate, to toss a little mischief into the brew & say the unexpected, to combine scientific rigor with warmth & compassion, & to remind us often of the adage about not judging someone else unless you've walked in their moccasins.
In recent years we haven't seen as much of Russ. He was off riding his motorcycle with Libby, a free spirit, up, down, cross country ... New Mexico, California, Nova Scotia, we couldn't keep up with him! Russ always had a thing for the Natural World, for seeing what remained of this great Continent, how it might have looked originally, before white man arrived. We're glad he got a good look at so much of it.
Mel and I will very much miss the pleasure of his company.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. So many memories....especially of our younger days in Aunt Hulda's fabulous home. Russ used to take me up to the doll room (my favorite) all the time. For years we all gathered to celebrate Hulda and Gus's birthdays. More recently, Russ was such a help to my mom, Betty, when my dad, Al, was in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. He made the trek with her there time after time to visit. I am heartbroken, but will always remember Russ's smile, and the twinkle in his eyes.
