I always felt secure having all the men of the OHS Science department to "protect" me. Steve was a gentle man, a gentleman, smart, so smart and kind, helpful. Although sad to see him leave OHS, it was with joy that he transferred from OHS to MOHS where I live so that my daughter, Liz, got a chance to meet him and see what a wonderful person he was. She took the moon and stars tie from the basket because she remembered that he wore it with the cape and the photo was in the school newspaper. He will live on in our hearts.

I did not know Steve very well, but I do know that even in what he knew were the last months of his life, he had the spirit to compete at the ANA World's Fair of Money, and the generosity to host a suite party. I will miss him; the world will be poorer in his absence.

I knew Steve through the ANA Judges and Exhibitors Program. Steve was always an enthusiastic exhibitor and as a fellow judge, was just an easy-going nice guy, a pleasure to work with. Even though his health was failing, it was an inspiration seeing him at this year's ANA, the joy that numismatics and the friends he knew in the hobby brought to him was apparent. I've lost several numismatic friends this year; Steve will be particularly missed since he might have had many more years ahead of him, but he made the most of the time given to him. I suspect he's busy in God's bourse now, showing them the right way to organize an exhibit. Steve, my friend, rest in peace.

Never before I have I been so inspired by a teacher. I had the pleasure of taking two years of chemistry with Mr.Midd and participating in science league. His passion for the subject was the biggest influence on me deciding to pursue chemistry as my college major. Reminders of him are never far-- I constantly used his funny mnemonics and methods for my courses. Most recently, while sitting in my medical school, I learned about a drug that I first was introduced to in a research paper I wrote for Mr. Midd! I am so thankful to have been able to learn from him. He gave his students the confidence to learn and love a difficult subject. He constantly challenged us while making it so much fun. He truly made chemistry magical. I will never forget him and he certainly will be missed.

Wow!!! We knew that Steve was ill and also, a fighter; but this news was a shocker. We just returned home from Mrytle Beach to a niece's graduation; received Carol's
card and layed the letter aside. I got into the emails, and Ron Snack sent the news to Rich Giessuebel who forwarded it to me. I read it in the computer before I read Carol's letter.
Dear Carol and Mother Mary: We are really saddened by his passing. As you all visited Roanoke, We are glad that we made it out to dinner -- even though Steve could not eat much. He whispered to me -- that he was going -- and lasted almost another year and a half. Glad that you traveled as much as you did, the he enjoyed his coins and the studies thereof, and the collecting of them. His outlook was bright despite all that he had gone through.
Mother Mary, thank you for your cards, and as always seems to be the case, Mothers love their children always.
Carol -- his 31 years with you must have been something. You were a real spark in his life and we so greatly admire your letters, your caring heart about people, but greatly about Steve. We will really miss him -- although, we only saw him once in the past 20 years.
He was a great physics teacher and I am so glad that I hired him -- the best in the last forty years at OHS.
His work with the National Honor Society was always a treat to see and to attend the indoctrination services for that group --- so well done. He passed on my birthday, 12/10 -- I was 71.
It is a shock even as I write this. Please let us know when the Memorial Service will be at Rock Ridge Lake Community Club House -- we may come up for that.
Remember the Best Times -- he had them with you. Our sincerest condolences. Phil & Deanna

Where to begin with Mr. Midd. First of all, I had the pleasure of having Mr. Midd for 10th grade "Che-misery," as he would say. I will dearly miss him and he has left a lasting impression on me. Now i college, I took a Chemistry class (for business students) and passed quite easily because of Mr. Midd's lessons. Furthermore, a lot of my classmates would ask me for help and to teach them Chemistry because of the strong fundamentals Mr. Midd engrained in me. May you rest in peace Mr. Midd

I remember when my son Billy went through cancer and I always said he was my brave little soldier. I have often thought about Steve and prayed many prayers and my thoughts were always he is our Brave Big Soldier because in all the letters he was always planning another trip and every one knew he never took this cancer lying down. Although we did not get to see him much, we knew he had tackled this illness head on. When we got the call that he had passed away, I said my final prayer concerning Steve to thank God that he gave him the will to keep going and thanked God for his help so he could. We really enjoyed seeing Steve this summer and knew it may be the last. Steve seemed very happy then but we know it does not even compare to the happiness he is celebrating in heaven today.
We Love You

Oh my God......where do I begin.
Little did I know when Carol first introduced me to Steve, that we would become such good friends. What started out as a business partnership so quickly developed into the type of relationship where you can fill in the endings of each others jokes or sing the
lines to classic music hits from "back in the day".
In the thousands of hours we worked together, never... ever did the supply of humor and laughter run short.
I think to myself what are the things I remember most about Steve. And it hits me, it's what I don't remember.
When you work together as much as we did you would expect to see some things sooner or later. but not with Steve.
Never angry, never grumpy.
never moody. How is that I remember all the laughter, smiles, jokes....the positive attitude about any situation.
The only explaination is simply in the nature of Steve.
Truely, a positive person, one who could find the good, the humor, the best in all situations...and all people as well.
What an epitath, to have people say "what a hell of a nice guy"......simple and as straight forward as it is.....
The "nicest guy you would ever want to meet".....that was our Steve.
We will all miss Steve and his great attitude about life and people. But we are all the better for having known him. May we all keep his memory alive by emulating his positive perspective on life.
May he rest is peace.
