Kenneth J. Higgins Sr, 86, formerly of Pompton Lakes and Manchester NJ,
passed away Sunday, December 6, 2009 at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville, NJ.
Born April 29, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late James and
Claire (Bidwell) Higgins. Kenneth served his country during WWII in the US Navy,
aboard the USS Stevens, a naval destroyer, with the Pacific fleet.
He was employed as a longshoreman with the Holland America Line and later
as a Supervisor at the E.I. DuPont Cap Works, retiring in 1974. He served as an
Assistant Scout Master of BSA Troop 38 in Pompton Lakes and lent his time to
many youth and local community committees.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Muriel E. (Kadakas); son,
Kenneth J. Jr. (wife Maria) of Long Branch, NJ; daughter Valerie A. Reihl
(husband Frank) of West Milford, NJ; grandchildren Lisa Cronin and Matthew
Reihl; and sister, Joan Baxley, of Mahwah.
Catholic Mass and memorial services will be held Friday, December 11, at 11:00 am in the chapel at Victoria Mews Assisted Living, 51 North Main Street, Boonton (973-263-3000).
