My Uncle Jackie was a kind and thoughtful man. Although I did not get to know him until later in my life I feel blessed that I got the chance. We shared a special bond after the loss of his beloved wife Terri through a letter I wrote to him during that difficult loss. In turn, he was the first person who was there for me when I lost my father, James Doherty. His support to me during that difficult time will never be forgotten, as well as Jackie's memory, sense of humor, and of course, he was the consumate gentelman. Forever will you be in my heart Uncle Jackie. Love your niece, Lauren.

I was a young treasurer of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture college fraternity alumni association and I ran into Chief John T. Doherty. We had no funds in 1965 and he insisted that our 1890s era wooden home, with 23 students, living in 7 bedrooms, have a fire suppression sprinkler system. He felt that a sprinkler was a superior life safety feature and if we installed it, he could allow some leeway on other building features that did not meet modern Town of Amherst, Mass. building codes. He was adamant that he was going to do his utmost to prevent the loss of student life from fire. He was relentless in his insistence for the installation. We reluctantly borrowed funds to bring a 6 inch water line from the street and to drill holes throughout the house for a full coverage, iron pipe, wet system. It was never activated, but, he was correct to push us. The sprinkler gave us much peace of mind and assurance that we were doing the best for our boys.
Five years late we didn’t even argue, when we bought another 1890s era house 4 doors away on the same street. We built another full coverage system into the renovations before we moved in. Several years later, this system activated when a student candle started a 2nd floor bedroom fire in a pile of clothing. No fire damage but the water was no picnic.
Around the summer of 2005, I had the pleasure to visit with him at the Route 9, Pelham, Mass. home of his son. We laughed at our ancient conflict and his victories. He was a formidable foe. He made our residential properties safer. He made Amherst, Mass. a better place. I am pleased to have wrestled with him. He became a fine friend. Chief John T. Doherty made me a better person. God bless you.

I met Jack Doherty about seven years ago. He reminded me a lot of my own father, who also loved to tell stories. I enjoyed Jack's stories and I enjoyed his company, and I'm glad I had the chance to meet him.

"If you don't eat your dinner,
I'm going to call Uncle Jack over here!" For years I was afraid of Uncle Jack...
As I got older, I appreciated how he always opened up his home to me, did a great barbeque, and always provided
stimulating conversation.

A real and genuine leader. You had a very positive affect on my life even if it took me years to realize it. You will be missed...
