As I was arranging photographs of Mom, my thoughts turned to how quickly our lives pass. I was looking at pictures of Mom as a beautiful young woman.
I was reminiscing about her as our young mother in Jersey City.
When our yard was the center of the neighborhood.
And how she had made her faith a very big part of our lives.
She had an eclectic but purposeful mix of books about the house. There were books about the early Christians and Bible stories. And then the writings of Margaret Mead, and Life and National Geographic magazines. She taught us to appreciate the beauty of different cultures and religions.
But most important, to be concerned about those less fortunate. She taught a self-less and compassionate faith; emphasizing the Sermons on the Mount rather than the Ten Commandments. Mom’s strong faith instilled in us an awareness of people being treated unfairly and unjustly. As Bobby Kennedy said, “they share with us the same short moment of time”
I see Mom’s strong beliefs in all who still attend her church, as well as those who embrace her values in a secular way.
There is an Old Danish Expression, “nobody really dies who lives in the hearts of those left behind” Mom left so much of herself with us.
When cleaning Mom’s apartment, I noticed that we were making a time consuming effort to give her meager possessions to various charities rather than to quickly throw them away.
Mom, who had a broken heart, had taught us to open up our own.

Aunt Doris will always be remembered with a smile. The pcinics at the lake when we were kids and all of the holidays we spent together. Her smile, her voice (boy did she love to talk). I have always enjoyed the stories she would tell about growing up in Jersey City.
To your family from mine, our depest sympathies. Our thoughts are with you.

Our energizer bunny has gone. Aunt Doris certainly over the years put up hard fights to survive. She was always happy to be at a party, enjoy the company and food. She never had an unkind word. I will always remember the days at the lake & xmas parties. Who could forget her peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.
My prayers go out to the whole family
Love Sally and Family

Aunt Doris,
I know I didn't know you for long, but I can tell you've been beautiful your whole life because I don't know anyone else who is as beautiful as you are, so promise me that you won't use any beauty products because your the most beautiful person I've ever seen.
Keep Shining.
Zach wrote this on the way home from the nursing home three weeks ago. He showed it to me the night Aunt Doris died. I had to share.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered; Accept our prayers on behalf of the soul of thy departed handmaiden, Doris, and grant her an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellow-ship of thy saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Remember thy handmaiden, Doris,O Lord, according to the favour which thou bearest unto thy people, and grant that, increasing in knowledge and love of thee, she may go from strength to strength, in the life of perfect service, in thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.
O Eternal Lord God, who holdest all souls in life; Vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to thy whole Church in paradise and on earth, thy light and thy peace; and grant that we, following the good examples of Doris and others who have served thee here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into thine unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
