John was born and raised in Manhattan where he attended Dewitt Clinton High School. He lived in Bergenfield, NJ for 52 years where he was a long time parishioner of St. John’s R.C. Church. He moved to Rockaway in 2003. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Teresa, and eight children, Bob, Jack, Pat, Peggy, Larry, Ellen, Jane and Terry. John’s greatest joy was his eight children who remained close to him and to each other until the moment of his passing. He delighted in being surrounded by his children, their spouses, his thirteen grandchildren, and one great grandchild during innumerable family occasions and holidays. He will be remembered for his kind and loving heart. John served proudly in the US Army for four years during World War II as a staff sergeant in the European theater. He fought in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a contract manager at the Western Electric division of AT&T for 45 years in New York City and Whippany NJ, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. In addition to his children, he is survived by grandchildren Kate Murphy, Jonathan Rehm, Elissa Bradley, Kevin Vanderhoof, Kelly Rehm, Anna Rehm, Nick Harvey, Sean Harvey, Peter Olsen, Christine Rehm, Erin Rehm, Scott Olsen, Thomas Hermann, and great grandchild Jamie Murphy. He was predeceased by his sister, Gertrude Fox. Visitation will be on Tuesday at the Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave., in Denville NJ on Tuesday from 3:00 – 5:00 and 7:00 – 9:00. The Mass of Christian Burial Services will be held at St. Bernard’s Church at 22 St. Bernard’s Rd, Wharton, NJ on Wednesday at 10:00 AM.
