Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Hardy
Elizabeth A (Black) Hardy of Denville, NJ passed peacefully at home on March 30, 2024 at 99 years of age after several years of declining health. Elizabeth was born on December 16, 1924 to Augustus and Ella(Beam) Black, in her Grandparents house, 70 Franklin Road, in the Indian Lake section of Denville, NJ and has been a lifelong resident of Denville. Her grandparents were Anna (Cooper) Beam and William Beam, and Milton and Elizabeth (Munson) Black; great grandparents Jeremiah Cooper (Louise Hall Cooper(Jeremiah was Denville’s first Truant Officer; great-great grandparents David Cooper and Sabina (Ayres) Cooper, Sabina’s father owned what is now Ayres Knuth Farm in the Union Hill section of Denville.
She met her husband Morgan Hardy, the love of her life, on a blind date and they married on June 15, 1944 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Boonton, NJ. Her career began at the Scrub Oaks iron ore mine in Mine Hill, NJ. She worked at Compton Press in Morristown for several years and then she was employed by the Township of Denville as Utilities Collector for thirty years, retiring in 1991.
She was predeceased by her sister, Judith Holinko, in 1973; and her beloved husband, Morgan, in 2003; her 3 brothers-in-law Joseph Hardy, Edmond Hardy, and Robert Holinko; and 3 sisters- in-law Dora Hardy, Ida Hardy, and Ann Hardy.
She is survived by her two daughters, Catherine (Pat) Simone of Morris Plains, NJ and Michele Hardy of Denville, NJ; her Granddaughter Lauren Hassan (Keith) and Great-Grandchildren Caitlin and Patrick Hassan. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews Lynne Copeland (Thomas), Michael Holinko (Coleen-deceased), and Jeffrey Holinko; Edmond Hardy (Pat), William Hardy, Maureen Dugan (Chris); Lynn Domeraski (Vincent), Sharyn Cole, and Thom Hardy; a nephew Andrew Holinko predeceased her in 2007; she is also survived by many great and great-great nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as many cherished friends and neighbors.
Elizabeth was known as Liz to her side of the family and Betty to her husband’s family as well as her colleagues and neighbors. She loved gardening, cooking, baking, sewing and could paint, wallpaper, and fix just about anything. She always had time to listen or counsel if asked. The house was always open to relatives, friends and their daughters’ friends. You could be sure there would also be dogs, cats, birds, etc. as part of the family. She and Morgan enjoyed vacationing at Cape Cod, mainly the town of Chatham (their favorite place), as well as Gettysburg, PA and several places in NY State.
We take comfort knowing she is now reunited with her husband, Morgan, but she is deeply missed.
She had requested cremation. Please join us for a Funeral Mass on June 1st, 2024, at 10 AM at St. Mary's Church, 15 Myers Avenue, Denville, NJ 07834, with a procession to follow to Denville Cemetery, 9 Savage Road, Denville, NJ 07834, for a Graveside service.
In lieu of flowers she requested donations be made to JDRF, Denville Animal Shelter, any animal rescue organization, or other charity of your choice.
