Though she is Jasjit Kaur for everyone but for me she is my guddi maasi as my mother Balwinder Kaur used to call her. Right from my childhood days till my last meeting with her I found in her the attributes of a guddi (doll)....true to her nick name --lovely, sweet and a little naughty as well. Her bond with my mom was so strong that in 2020 when my mom left for her heavenly abode...(we didn't let Amardeep know massiji about my mom due to her ill health)...the whole day massiji kept on remembering her and repeating that Balwinder bhenji had come to visit her and bade her good bye...So far, yet so near they were to each other.
I remember those beautiful days when Massarji had shifted to India and joined as Professor in Punjabi University, Patiala. We got the chance to live close...got the opportunity to know my maasi more. Her sense of humour and love for us is unforgettable. Long evenings were spent together...mom enjoying her company and...daddy and massarji indulging in long discussions about their passion for books.
So proud of our elders who are the architects of our lives.
The fond memories will always be cherished and serve as beacons.

My favorite memory of Auntie is of our visit to their home in Michigan. She had an understated sophisticated style and an admirable wit and intellect. She generously shared her gardening tips and healthy recipes. It was lovely to spend some time with her, getting to enjoy her company and sense of humor away from the usual large family gatherings.

We met Jasjit bhenji and Dr Jaswant Singh 30 years back in Michigan during fund raising for establishing Sikh Chair at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Since then we became extended family. I was inspired by their love to establish libraries in rural India. It’s their inspiration, we were able to build library in our village. Jasjit was a very pious lady, never talked bad about anyone, fully participated in Dr Jaswant Singh’s effort to help the poor in Punjab especially in rural education. So many people in Punjab inspired by their enthusiasm, hard work and spirit. Inspired by then so many libraries are being built in Punjab villages. Their legacy will stay for ever. Bhenji, you will be missed dearly. Baldev and Kari Dhaliwal.

As I visit my childhood memories, I clearly remember the excitement our family used to have when Bhuaji and fufadji (as our parents used to call them) came to visit us. As and when they visited India, we were the luckiest ones to have them stay with for the longest times. I remember how much I have adored her for her choice of clothes and makeup and how gently she used to speak and how much love she used to spread and mostly her beautifully contagious smile. She has given us beautiful childhood memories and taught us great things that we will always be following. I wish Rahul and Abeer had met her too and they would also have been blessed by her. ♥️

Some people shape you in life and leave a long lasting effect on you. Some people teach you how to be a better human and how its so important in life to keep learning. Some people help you being the best version of yourself by always encouraging you. Two of those people were Jaswant fuffadji and Jasjeet bhuaji. I will always remember how they shaped me as a person by bringing in me the habit to read. Bhuaji was kind of a person who taught you so much by just being there in your life. And that’s what i will miss the most about her, her just being there. May she always find peace in heaven with the family that is there. She remains in our hearts and she lives with us through her teachings.

In a matter of nine months, I have lost two of these gem ladies who by age were like sisters to me but played the role of my mother. One is my sister and one is my bhuaji- Jasjeet Kaur. She was the youngest sister to my father and since they had a lot of age gap, bhuaji was more like a sister and friend to us. I never had to think once before telling her my feelings and talking with her about anything. From sharing to clothes to makeup to deepest feelings, she was my go to person always. Though she was struggling with her memory in her last days but I remember how perfectly she talked to me on video call a few days back. She remembered my name, who I was and asked about everyone in family taking their names. To our surprise, she asked about my grandson as well who she has never met. I did not think once that it was the last time she was talking to me. But God has plans which we have to abide by. Still, I will always cherish all my memories with her.

The first ever memory of Massiji ( my Grandma’s youngest sister) I have is of childhood when she visited us and my mom was always in awe of her beauty and the person Massiji was. My mom always used to tell me that Massiji had a very close resemblance to a yesteryear hindi film actress Nanda.
I always had very fond memories with Massiji when she visited us in India. They say there are angels on this earth who always look at us, help us and protect us. Massiji is the same angel for me who loved me unconditionally, took care of me and helped me in my difficult times in America.
I never knew that this will be the last time I will be seeing her 4 years ago. This picture of us was taken a day before I left America and this always brought smile and beautiful memories I created with Massiji.
Massiji you will always be missed.
