I only knew Forrest for a short time. When you're the eager know-it-all new guy at a club, not many people want to help you out until you prove yourself. Forrest was never like that. He put up with my cocky self-confidence and stupid questions patiently.
Moreover he did so humbly. I was stunned one day when I bought a very high-end technical book and found the author had thanked Forrest in the introduction. This author is respected as a genius, yet he spoke of Forrest with awe. When I saw Forrest next, I asked if he was the same person. He said he was, and tried to teach me a little bit about the topic in the book -- which was way too advanced for me to fathom.
Forrest was an engineer's engineer, but he was also humble, patient, kind and giving to strangers like me. That's rare. What an amazing role model. Someday I want to be more like Forrest. I think everyone could use a little Forrest Gehrke in their life.
73 Forrest. I will miss you.
