Peter B. Smalley passed away at Merry Heart nursing home in Succasunna, NJ on May 7, 2017. He was 89 years old. Born in Ogdensburg, NY he was raised in Westwood and resided in Rockaway Twp., NJ for 56 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 -1948. He then worked as an electromechanical technician at Kearfott Corp. in Little Falls, Aircraft Radio in Boonton, and at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Whippany, Madison and Murry Hill for 31 years where he engaged in high-data-rate acquisition radar for the Nike Zeus and Safeguard Missiles systems before retiring in 1986. Peter loved woodworking, model trains, and playing golf at Peace Pipe Country Club, he was also the Assistant District Commissioner and Eagle Scout council advisor with the Boy Scouts of America, Patriots' Path Council, and received the Silver Beaver distinguished service award. He was predeceased by his first wife of 46 years, Jean (Muirheid) Smalley in 2002. Peter is survived by his wife of 12 years, Joan (Woelfel) Smalley of Rockaway Twp., and his sons Clifford P. & Karen Smalley of Franklin Falls, NY, and Kenneth W. Smalley & Susan E. Stadeli of Kinnelon, NJ. He is also survived by his grandchildren Clayton Smalley, Amber Myerowitz, Vanessa L. Smalley and Colin J. Smalley, as well as his step children Eric, Mark, Keith and Sharon Joy Woelfel and their children. Funeral services will begin at 9am on Wednesday May 10, 2017 at Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave Denville, NJ 07834 www.normandean.com. and then going to the Church of the Saviour in Denville for a 10AM funeral service. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover, NJ. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday May 9, from 4-8PM.
