Obituary of Janie C. Scherer

Please share a memory of Janie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Janie C. Scherer (Nee Davis) passed away on April 1, 2016 at the age of 91, late of Oakland, NJ, formerly of Branchville, and longtime resident of Mt. Tabor, NJ. Born on September 19, 1924 to Raymond G. and Mamie Davis and raised on a farm in Stedman, NC, she was the 2nd of 9 children. Janie graduated from the 11th grade in May of 1942 and when the 12th grade was added the following year, she graduated again in May of 1943. Wanting to do her part during World War II, she went to radio school in Raleigh, NC, receiving her junior Radio Mechanic-Technicians certificate in July, 1943. When it was announced that civilian radio mechanic-technicians were no longer needed, Janie would move to Baltimore and work for Glenn Martin assembling instrument panels for airplanes. She then switched careers and became part of the Nurses Cadet Corp and was educated in nursing at Church Home Hospital in Baltimore. She would work at hospitals in Havre de Grace, MD and Philadelphia, PA. It was in Philadelphia that she earned her Masters Degree in Operating Room Technique. Janie would then move to Morristown, NJ where she worked at All Souls Hospital in the operating room. She worked there until 1960. She met Arnold Scherer and they married in May of 1958. They had 2 children, George and Barbara, and moved to, and became longtime residents of, Mt. Tabor, NJ. Janie was not only a wife and mother, but also very talented with her hands. In addition to being an excellent seamstress, Janie could knit (Christmas sox are the most memorable), crochet and quilt (lots of those)! In addition, she would also learn how to reupholster furniture and replace caning in chairs, both hand-caning and pressed, and dabbled in painting. She was one talented lady, although she would often downplay her many talents. Janie was predeceased by her husband, Arnold, on April 1, 2012. She is survived by her son George and his wife Jody Scherer, of Windham, NY, her daughter Barbara and her husband Mark Mitchell of Oakland, NJ. Her 3 grandchildren Michael Scherer, Michelle Mitchell and Joseph Mitchell also survive her. Funeral services will be held privately under the direction of Norman Dan Home for Services 16 Righter Ave Denville, NJ 07834. The family asks that if you wish to make a contribution in Janie's memory, please send one to the Ashland Fire Department, P.O. Box 127, Ashland, NY 12407.
